Dave Egger's parents died from cancer within a month of each other when he was 21 and his brother, Christopher, was seven. They left the Chicago suburb where they had grown up and moved to San Francisco. This book tells the story of their life together.

 Equally tragic, hysterical, and beautiful.

This extraordinarily well written debut is a seriously rare find. It gives a brutally honest insight of the most exceptionally difficult of situations. And then, with the additional (and very funny) Mistakes We Knew We Were Making tagged on at the end, takes you even further into Eggers' bizarre and telling thought process.

The only complaint I had is the fact that it gets a bit frivolous towards the end, but this is a minor weakness as anyone who has read that far in is already hooked by then. I wanted to re-read it even before I had finished it.
