During the mid 1980s Howard Marks had forty three aliases, eighty nine phone lines and owned twenty five companies throughout the world. Whether bars, recording studios or offshore banks, all were money laundering vehicles serving the core activity: dope dealing. Marks began to deal small amounts of hashish while doing a postgraduate philosopy course at Oxford, but soon he was moving much larger quantities. At the height of his career he was smuggling consignments of up to fifty tons from Pakistan and Thailand to America and Canada and had contact with organisations as diverse as MI6, the CIA, the IRA and the Mafia. Mr Nice is Howard Marks extraordinary story.

Great read about freedom of choice...and marijuana!

The front cover proclaims "He was Britain's most wanted man. He has just spent seven years in America's toughest penitentiary. You'll like him."

It couldn't be more accurate!

The story begins with Marks' release from his American prison, before going back to the beginning of his life and his education. As he moves onwards to university you really feel as if you're there with him, smoking grass for the first time and tripping out on acid. You will laugh out loud at his 'adventures' in Oxford, and you will agree with all of his philosophies! Marks' is exactly the kind of guy you'd be happy spending hours with, just listening to his stories, a bit like a Welsh Billy Connolly!!

As he moves onward from Uni, and you see how he became involved in drug dealing and smuggling, you can easily see why it's a life choice he made, and you must have a heart of stone if you think what he's doing is wrong.

One of the very few downsides to the book is the amount of names you have to try and take in and picture and remember. Obviously this is an unavoidable problem, due to the amount of people he came into contact with, but having to flick back through pages to see who he was talking about became a bit tiresome. Although no-one will forget McCann!! The only other downside to the story is the fact that most of the smuggling tales are not too dissimiliar, so it can feel as if you've read the same story in the previous chapter.

An enjoyable read that's difficult to lose interest in, it will leave you craving your next joint, even if you don't smoke!!!

If you like it, buy senor nice - not as gripping, but told with the same wit and wisdom as this is.
