The classic story of Bilbo Baggins and his adventures through Rivendell, Mirkwood, and Erebor; released in a new paperback format. Easily one of the most famous children's books of modern times, "The Hobbit" is a must read and this edition will bring it to life for a whole new generation of readers. Bilbo Baggins enjoys a quiet and contented life, with no desire to travel far from the comforts of home. Then, one day, the wizard Gandalf and a band of dwarves arrive unexpectedly and enlist his services - as a burglar - on a dangerous expedition to raid the treasure-hoard of Smaug the dragon. Bilbo's life is never to be the same again. "The Hobbit" became an instant success when it was first published in 1937, and nearly 70 years later, Tolkien's epic tale of elves, dwarves, trolls, goblins, myth, magic and adventure, with its reluctant hero Bilbo Baggins, has become a timeless classic. This new children's edition of "The Hobbit", with a refreshed cover, will bring this classic story to a whole new generation of readers.

This is the first book of The lord of the rings series. Possibly maybe the better of the 4 ! I read it when i was 15 now im 16 and my younger brother read and he is 12 and he said its his favourite book. Yes the chapters are 40 or more pages long but they explain the chracters you get to know well in the LOTR. I finished this within 3 days and my younger brother it took him 1 week.

Amazing !! Just cant wait for the film!!

Must buy for JRR Tolkein fans

Amazing 10/10

 A Beloved Classic.

I remember this book being read to me at a very young age and it thrilled me every time. To hear of the rolling hills of the Shire, the House of Elrond and the eventful trip through Mirkwood was to live the adventure with Bilbo and the dwarves.

And every few years I take up the book myself and rediscover those familiar tracks, and occasionally find something I missed or didn't understand before which rekindles the Took-ish curiosity which has a place in all of us somewhere.

Wish id have read this as a kid

This is technically the first installment to the lord of the rings Trilogy though i confess to have started the trilogy first. It was writen as a children's book whilst Tolkien was at Oxford as a lecture. In my opinion it works just as well as an introduction to the adult literature that he is famous for producing. This story revolves around Bilbo Baggins a quite and reseved hobit who likes staying out of trouble and enjoying the quite life. It starts when a stranger comes to call and you marvel at the unexpected adventures he partates in whislt crossing middle earth. Acompaned by Gandalf a strange and willful wizard and a group of drawfs and there king. In this story everybody is suprised at how Bilbo fare and all learn to trust him for good or ill. As a major part of this book is where he meets a creature called Gollum and finds a misterious ring.
i think its an amazing and exciting book helping you further step in to the world of middle earth. This book is a must read before the trilogy. i believe it helps you understand further, characters and situations you will incounter in his later works. i also believe it sets up the characters of both Gandalf and Smeagul perfectly and made me want to reread all of lord of the rings. if your 8 or 80 and you life fantasy this is a must read! Cant believe i nearly didnt read this cos its a kids book.

 Exciting Read.

This is a book I've been meaning to read for ages, especially after being a fan of the Lord of the Rings movies. As I was reading this, it made me wish I had loved to read as a child, as I would have totally loved this book back then too.
I'm currently trying to get my 10 year old son to read it, but sadly like I was at his age, he doesn't want to read. Hmmm.

Anyway, I totally loved this book, it was better than I thought it would be. It was an exciting read and very enjoyable. It wasn't long until I was lost within the pages and hooked. I've not read much in the way of fantasy fiction, and if I can find more books like this then I'd be hooked.

Now I have to read The Lord of the Rings series!

 Children find this story irresistible

It's a long time since I was a little girl and my memories of the stories I read and that were read to me then are mostly quite vague. A couple still stand out in my mind and The Hobbit is the most memorable. We all loved it. I clearly remember sitting quietly with my class of 7 year old chums, cross-legged on the classroom floor around our teacher, waiting for her to start reading the next instalment. We were on tenterhooks, wondering if Bilbo and the dwarfs would get away from the Trolls or the Goblins or the Spiders or the Elves ... . It was nerve-wracking and enthralling and we were all absolutely, 100% attentive: you could've heard a pin drop in that class between about 2.30 and 3.15pm during the weeks of The Hobbit. I read it by myself soon after that and I still read the book from time to time and listen to it on audiobook. The magic never dies. I wonder how many children Tolkien is responsible for getting hooked on reading. This really is a wonderful children's book and I recommend it for reading alone, reading together, reading to children and (if you're very lucky) having read to you.
