A story of love and passion between Catherine and Heathcliff that even death could not get in the way. You either like this book or hate it. You'll be surprise the violence and cruelty surrounds the characters in this book not to mention some foul language on the side. You'll never thought that it actually was written by a woman living in the late 1880's and a being a daughter of an Anglican minister.
A Gothic epic romance that has served to be a basis for the famous 1939 movie which was titled the same as the book.
Obsession of loss, passion for unrequited love, ghosts, madness, desolate setting and peace at death in the end.
An absolute must read.
Being a classic work of literature, it seems nearly impossible to critique this novel. There are many positive attributes to this book. The writing style and use of language is impeccable and the narators (namely Lockwood and Nelly) are very consistant. There are also many lush descriptions of the surroundings, so much so that you can actually picture the scenes beautifully.
However there is one aspect of this novel that stops me really enjoying it, and that is the main characters. I understand that these characters are wildly in love, but the sheer petulance and childishness of both of these characters grates on me. These two characters could easily solve their issues regarding love with a simple conversation it seems, but tend to pussyfoot around the subject until their efforts become futile. I find the presence of unnecessary cruelty by the characters a tad on the overbearing side too.
This is by all means not a bad book; there are many fantastic elements like the ones I have just highlighted. However, I did find some of the characterisation of the protagonists a bit unbearable. Either way it is a must read as one of the leading Gothic love stories of all time, but I do not think it was quite for me.
