If there is nothing in this book that disturbs you then you are either not reading it correctly or are deficient in normal human emotion.
Brilliantly written, the most chilling thing about this book is its plausibility - this could happen, a thought that left me cold with dread!
For a casual reader not the easiest story to get into but if that is the case i suggest watching the john hurt version of the film - this is quite faithful to the book and captures the atmosphere perfectly, after this try reading it again.
For 'serious readers' i found myself sucked in immediately (i had watched the film so was familiar to the plot) i couldnt put it down!
Absolutely wonderful in every way and i think it should be on gcse or even a-level english literature curriculum!
This is without a doubt one of the finest books i have ever had the pleasure of reading. Ive read it 5 times now and still havnt tired of it. Its pretty chilling and disturbing stuff but once youve finished you will want to read it again and again. brilliant!
After reading this book, all I can say is this.
Take a good hard look around you and you will see that George Orwell's 1984 can no longer be described as a book of fiction! It's clear that the events of this book have and will continue to come to pass. A literary masterpiece but also a portal into the future, the future to Orwell at least.......It's our present in reality. Chilling to the core and coming true at a frightening rate, Orwell's 1984, in my opinion can be seen as nothing short of a prophecy.
Having finally gotten around to reading this book considered a classic,i can see why it is considered just that.
A man going against the system as it were, daring to think his own thought, rather than being subjugated by big brother.
Okay,it's a little odd and i can see why some would shrug it all of as silly paranoia in a made up world, but i could see the argument that this was about the kind of control the powers that be are trying to have over people, the thought police really could still happen in my view.
It's a world where control over everyone is the norm and a few dare to question why this is so,this focuses on one man's vision of this world and it is,as so many people have said about this book, something that fits in to today's world, thought crime does feel very real sometimes. I liked what this book was saying, but had to grab my dictionary quite a bit for the very obscure words, but that was a learning experience as a bonus i guess.
What a book...hold on,i think someone's listening to my thoughts,i'm off.
I bought this book and read it on a long coach journey to Strasbourg. At 336 pages it isn't too long, but isn't over quickly either.
In my opinion, this book is now one of my all time favourites. Orwell paints the picture of a people, suppressed by power and a lack of accurate information. It is chillingly dark from start to finish, especially part 3. Thus it is every bit deserving of its critical acclaim as one of the most important novels of the 20th century. Most people have heard of room 101, and Big Brother; this book isn't everywhere for no reason.
Buy it, read it, love it - especially at the price it is on here. Just watch out for the thought police.
