Top 100 Books Reviewer

I borrowed this book from my sis, after she had read it and loved it. I'd seen some other people I know have read it too, so I wanted to check it out. It's the first book I've read from this author.
This is one book I will not allow my sis to sell at one of her boot sales, it has to stay on her book shelf!!!! LOL

As you can tell I loved this book. I wasn't quite sure what to expect at first? I knew it was about The Wicked Witch of the West from the movie The Wizard of Oz, we all loved so much as children. As I read the book I began to fall in love with Elphaba, and I loved reading about every minute of her life in this novel. I also became really fond of Fiyero, Glinda, Nanny and Doctor Dillamond. Basically I loved them all really! Except the Wizard........ Hmmmm.

This novel is different to the movie, and it is really a book for adults, and is a tale from the side of: The Wicked Witch of the West. For me this book was a light, enjoyable, cosy read. It was a book that I loved snuggling up to on my bed or in the bath to read. I just loved entering their world. However, I know that some people have said it wasn't a light read for them as it contained political issues (personally I hate politics in real life). I guess this is where we all differ, and what a boring place it would be if we all agreed on everything.

There wasn't a boring moment in this book, it was exciting, emotionally moving and funny.
I haven't seen the Musical, may be one day I will?

So to sum this book up, it was and is.. EXCELLENT!
I'll be reading more from this author! ;)

 Simply Outstanding!

I am a fan of historical fiction so titles such as Wicked would not normally float my galley so to speak, however it is a work of genius.

I saw the musical in the West End first and was so impressed and enthused that I decided to read the book and was quite literally blown away. I have recommended it to numerous people who have all loved it and therefore I recomend it to anyone reading this review.

It actually left me feeling guilty about my childhood feelings of fear and loathing towards the "wicked" witch! Pehaps a bit of a lesson to younger readers not to judge a book by its cover!

Enjoy.

 My favorite book ever

Don't read these reviews that wicked is rubbish, and dont read it see the musical. Ignore them for they dont know what they are talking about. Wicked is perhaps one of the best books ever, it so clever, and marvelous. Gregory maguire is extremely clever and witty, as he not only writes a fantastic book, but also writes it from the storyline of a book set down so many years ago. Honsetly read it, you won't regret it

Where did all the hype come from?

The book was first published in 1995, I do not remember any hype at that time. The success now comes on the back of the musical. The book is boring and never delivers. It had promise, but once Elphaba lost her sharp teeth, so did the book.
Don't bother, see the musical.

 Not what I expected...

Firstly, I am a MASSIVE fan of Wicked the musical and I bought this book after seeing it, to fill in the gaps and have a fuller knowledge of the world of Oz. This book bears very little resembelence to the musical. I can't even begin to imagine how this slow and rather boring book led to the complete and fantastic remodelling to make Wicked the musical. Differences include Fiyero never going out with Glinda, Elphaba never taking magic lessons, certain transformations never occuring (i.e. tin-man, scarecrow, etc), Fiyero has a wife and children which feature very heavily in the book, and the list goes on and on. The book is tedious, even for a die-hard fan like myself.
I'd advise you to buy the book if you've never seen the show to enjoy it for what it is, which is a interesting insight into the wicked witches' side of the story of the Wizard of Oz. If you've seen the show, buy it if you're desperate for more, but don't expect great things...
