Mariam is only fifteen when she is sent to Kabul to marry the troubled and bitter Rasheed, who is thirty years her senior. Nearly two decades later, in a climate of growing unrest, tragedy strikes fifteen-year-old Laila, who must leave her home and join Mariam's unhappy household. Laila and Mariam are to find consolation in each other, their friendship to grow as deep as the bond between sisters, as strong as the ties between mother and daughter. With the passing of time comes Taliban rule over Afghanistan, the streets of Kabul loud with the sound of gunfire and bombs, life a desperate struggle against starvation, brutality and fear, the women's endurance tested beyond their worst imaginings. Yet love can move a person to act in unexpected ways, lead them to overcome the most daunting obstacles with a startling heroism. In the end, it is love that triumphs over death and destruction. "A Thousand Splendid Suns" is an unforgettable portrait of a wounded country and a deeply moving story of family and friendship. It is a beautiful, heart-wrenching story of an unforgiving time, an unlikely bond and an indestructible love

Top 100 Books Reviewer

Some time ago I read Hosseini's The Kite Runner and found it deeply inspiring, indeed possibly the best book I've ever read in my life. A Thousand Splendid Suns is nearly as touching as its predecessor - it tells the heart-wrenching tale of the life of two burqa-clad women in Afghanistan under the Taliban regime, and how love can still shine through such horrific circumstances. This book will make you count your lucky stars and give you an insight into the horrible plight of women who are born in male-dominant communities where women are treated as inferior chattels.

I cannot recomend this book enough, l defy anyone not to be moved by it. I actually shouted out aloud at one part of the book and cried more than l care to mention. Absolutely fantastic and it is written so beautifully. I have just started reading The kite runner which l think is his first novel (back to front l know!) and l can see myseld saying the same about that one as well.

 Truly Splendid book

After reading the Kite Runner, I could not wait for Hosseini's next book, and I wasn't left disappointed! This portrayal of life in Afghanistan, which I knew nothing about has truly inspired me. The female characters portrayed in the book come to life, and the book deals with the difficulties that Afghan women experience in a culture way beyond what one could imagine. The story is descriptive and well written. The historical details of latter day Afghan history, only helps to enhance the story. I knew nothing of the history or culture of Afghanistan and found myself drawn into this book and it's characters. Hosseini writes so well, that I couldn't put this book down. I read several books in a year and this one was by far the best I have read in 2007. I just can't wait for his next book.

 Another gem from Khaled Hosseini

I am already eagerly awaiting his next book. I wasnt particularly interested in Afghan history and life until I was tempted by the magnificent Kite Runner. This book continues a growing insight into a country few of us know or have experienced unless we are holding a rifle and herein lies the tragedy. A country having had such a violent past and present only enters our daily lives when we debate whether our troups should be there. But I would implore you to read this book passionately written by an author with real love for what ultimatley is a beautiful country ravished by decades of war. The story is shocking, the backdrop terrifying, but all in all this is an uplifting life affirming achievement of a book and I just hope one day Afghanistan is free.

Brilliant read, real insight to how the others may live

For those unfamiliar with the arranged marriage scenarios and what horrid things women are subjected too at times, this book will make you laugh, cry and feel useless at times to prevent these atrocities. Even though this is fictional, is it as true an account as can happen.
Khaled Housseini is truly a gifted writer and I look forward to the next ones!
