When Jacob Jankowski, recently orphaned and suddenly adrift, jumps onto a passing train, he enters a world of freaks, grifters, and misfits - the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth - a second-rate travelling circus struggling to survive during the Great Depression, making one-night stands in town after endless town. Jacob, a veterinary student who almost earned his degree, is put in charge of caring for the circus menagerie. It is there that he meets Marlena, the beautiful young star of the equestrian act, who is married to August, the charismatic but twisted animal trainer. He also meets Rosie, an elephant who seems untrainable until he discovers a way to reach her. Water for Elephants is illuminated by a wonderful sense of time and place. It tells a story of a love between two people that overcomes incredible odds in a world in which even love is a luxury that few can afford.

A great story written perfectly. I couldn't put it down and I cried and I laughed. A classic love story starring an elephant called Rosie

I took a few books on holiday and this turned out to be one of them. I had seen the new hit film advertised but thoroughly enjoy reading and so i thought i'd give this one a shot.
Never have i had a book that i have been unable to put down as much as this one. It was indulging and the way Gruen writes gives you such an insight of the characters which make you feel like you know them as people. The book is wonderful, filled with love, hate, regret, tradegy.
PERFECT.
Would highly recommend.

 Absolutely ADORED this book!

I had heard about the film and thought that because the books are usually better; I would read it. I never expected it to be so wonderful. - The best book I have ever read! I laughed and cried many times (with both laughter and sadness).

Since reading it I have let many friends and family members borrow my book and they have told me that they all felt the same - a very well written book with an incredibly heartwarming story.
I also liked the fact that Sara Gruen added her story to the back, explaining where her ideas came from and why she decided to write the book. It made me feel that I really understood the story behind the book.

I'm looking forward to reading it again very soon! :)
