A strangely elegaic and disturbing novel of psychological suspense. The first person narrator is a young californian boy who escapes an impoverished background to attend a small college in new england, where he falls in with a group of upper-class boys and one girl who all study ancient greek under the tutelage of julian, their mesmeric teacher. Attempting to create a true bacchanal, four of their number work themselves into a trance-like condition and come to discover that they have murdered a local farmer. Then bunny, who was not involved, begins to blackmail the others and our narrator is drawn into a plot to cover up the original crime and to silence bunny.

 An excellent read

my favourite of Donna Tartt's novels, this book will suck you into the world of it's protagonists- every reader will be able to relate to Richard on some level as he attempts to catch up socially and culturally to the group, ultimately becoming entangled in a story which will alter the course of his life forever.

This book filled me with an intense desire to learn Ancient Greek, which should suggest how good it is- very few books can instill a want for dead languages- this one manages it by making everything that happens in the novel, bad or good, seem ultimately real, yet covered by the hazy idealism of youth.

A must-read novel.

A compelling, well written, suspense-filled read.

This is brilliant book you will not be able to put down. A clicky group of advantaged students studying classical greek are joined by a new student who is sucked into the complicated group dynamics and tragedy ensues.
