The remarkable memoir of film star Michael J. Fox and his first ten years living with Parkinson's Disease. Diagnosed in 1991, Michael eventually lost his balance, his grace, his spontaneity, and the ability to read the morning newspaper. Even so, he realizes that, in fact, he is a lucky man.

This is no ordinary celebrity memoir. Michael J Fox is a household name in the United States after his meteoric rise to fame in film and TV. But this story starts in dramatic fashion with his discovery aged 30, that his little finger was trembling and twitching. It took a full year before he could accept that he had Parkinson's Disease, a progressive, degenerative and incurable neurological disorder. Coping with this 'relentless assault and accumulating damage' and concealing it as long as possible while he continued his movie and TV career led to alcoholic despair and traumatic marital relations. He felt his 'life was in flames', but he kept his condition private for seven years. Reluctantly he reached out for help from a Jungian analyst, who gave him the understanding of himself that he needed. The story is told in an easy, colloquial style, and chapters about his childhood, his determination to be an actor and his early struggles are skilfully interlaced with the later ones about the development of the disease - which he has called a 'profoundly enriching gift'. He now considers himself a lucky man. He describes what he calls the 'on-off phenomenon' - the disease reduces him to a prisoner in his own body until the medication kicks in, bringing full functioning, but the strain of 'timing' this with the demands of his acting life led to his coming out of the closet to share his experience with Parkinson's. He had little idea what a big news story it would be, and what an enormous surge of concern and sympathy he would receive. Unknowingly, he had sparked a national conversation about PD, and hundreds of fellow sufferers felt emboldened to share their fears without being stigmatized. Now Fox plays a very valuable part in the Parkinson's Action Network (PAN) and has also founded the Michael J Fox Foundation for Parkinson Research. This is an honest, engrossing and uplifting read.

Lucky Man - A must read

Even if you're not a fan of his movies, or even the guy himself reading this book will change your mind. I've always enjoyed his ventures in the entertainment industry but this book is his greatest acomplishment...

The book tells of his life, the ups and downs, but also his sruggle with Parkinsons, and describes its effects and how it affects peoples life, including his own.

He's a very talented writer, witty and at some points had me laughing aloud, but there are very serious issues in this book.

The only downside to this book? Its not long enough, at the end i wanted it to continue. The book flows so well that i read it in two sittings, i couldn't put it down.

Mr Michael J. Fox I salute you, you're a funny, multi-talented, brave man and i look forward to a second book.

This is an Amazing book.Being a huge fan of the guy already and grown up watching the BTTF trilogy time and time again,i was tempted to purchase this book years ago but delayed for some reason. After reading it this week,it has made me even more of a fan."LUCKY MAN" is a brave, open, touching and funny journey. He takes you through all the Highs and lows of his young, yet very dramatic life.Through the efforts of trying to make it big as a young actor in the late 70s,to making it BIGGER than he could have ever imagined during his time as the golden boy of the 80s,then bringing you through the hardships of hiding his diagnosis of Parkinsons Disease for so many years in the fears of being treated different and fears of ending his career at such a young age. The book shows how amazingly opptamistic he is about life in general and is quite inspiring. Reading it can make you think how you would deal with one of lifes little suprises.....No matter how bad your day has been, you can always list endless reasons why YOU are a Lucky Man.

 Amazing

The best autobiography I have ever read, read it three times and still can't get enough of it. Who'd have thought Michael could write such a touching yet honest memoir. Had me captivated from the start with his light sense of humour and I instantly felt like he was talking directly to me. A must read for his fans and an absolute pleasure to read over and over again......

 The Fantastic Mr Fox?

Even if you dont really like Michael J Fox's work, after reading this you will respect the man. In a down to earth, humourous and heartfelt way he recounts his early life and career and the early diagnosis of parkinsons disease that would have destroyed many a lesser man but that Michael veiws as something of a blessing. Forcing him to semi retire and push work to one side he re-embraced the family he was in danger of losing and for this reason considers himself a lucky man.
Its an inspiring read, and never less than compelling be it detailing how he worked double shifts to fit filming Back to The future in with his work in Family Ties or describing how the early symptoms of Parkinsons made playing Johnny B Goode in the sequel so much harder. Lucky man reveals Michael J Fox not only to be an extremely strong person but he also comes across as extremely humble and likeable. Its an excellent book and should be read by all.
