John Peel, the balding, self-deprecating Liverpudlian with the wilfully obscure taste in music, was an unlikely national institution. Yet with a pioneering radio career that spanned almost forty years, in which he championed left-field sounds from Captain Beefheart to Siouxsie and the Banshees, that is exactly what he became. When he died suddenly at the age of sixty-five in October 2004, millions mourned the loss of this quirky, influential figure. Now in this new biography, Michael Heatley traces Peel's career from his early counter-culture days on pirate radio through his maverick career at Radio One, right up to his later years where he found a new audience on Radio Four's popular Saturday morning show, Home Truths.

This wasn't as good as I expecting it to be . Okay what was I expecting ? . I am not that sure . This book , to me is like a car that has its ups (good things) and downs (bad things) . You never know what will happen next . It tells about his DJ days from the 1960's onwards . His beloved Liverpool FC . People who he didn't like . Some stories about bands that did sessions (usually 4 songs) for him . If you ever listened late at night to John Peel on Radio 1 . He played songs by probably nearly ever underground indie bands in UK at least . Also was probably first person in the UK to play here , bands non-UK/ worldwide indie songs . He played bands like Napalm Death , The Fall , The Undertones , The Wedding Present , Billy Bragg , New Order , Dinosaur Jr , Boo Radleys , The Pixies , Babes in Toyland , Hole , Sonic Youth , Jesus and Mary Chain , Public Enemy , Heresy , Electro Hippies , Serious Drinking , Half Man Half Biscuit , etc
