Dawn French is one of the greatest comedy actresses of our time, with a career that has spanned nearly three decades, encompassing a vast and brilliant array of characters. Loved for her irreverent humor, Dawn has achieved massive mainstream success while continuing to push boundaries and challenge stereotypes. Here she describes the journey that would eventually establish her as a perhaps unlikely, but nevertheless genuine, national treasure. Dawn began her career as part of the groundbreaking alternative comedy group, the Comic Strip, marking a radical departure from the more traditional comedy acts of the time. Later came the all-female Girls On Top, which teamed Dawn with Jennifer Saunders, Ruby Wax and Tracy Ullman and firmly established women in British comedy. As part of the wildly successful and much loved duo French and Saunders, Dawn helped create a repertoire of brilliantly observed characters, parodying popular culture and impersonating everything from Madonna and Harry Potter to The Exorcist. Dawn's more recent role in the Vicar of Dibley showcased not only her talent but also her ability to take a controversial and topical issue and make it mainstream - and very funny. From her early years as an RAF child and her flat-sharing antics with Jennifer Saunders, to her outspoken views on sizism and her marriage to Lenny Henry, "Dear Fatty" will chronicle the extraordinary, hilarious rise of a complex, dynamic and unstoppable woman.

 OK but......

.......not great. What I don't like about this book is that it is just a series of letters from Dawn French to friends and family talking about the past. I know that a biography basically is that, but presented in this way does mean that it gets very tedious and after a couple of hundred pages you may find yourself wanting the book to end as I did. I am not saying it is a bad book, there are some funny and touching moments in it, however you don't really feel in touch with the author as you do with other biographies. I was also surprised that she didn't talk more about things like Vicar of Dibley. Personally I would have liked to hear about the other cast members, what went on, what they thought of each other, the fun etc. It was hardly mentioned which for me was disappointing as I am a big fan. As I have said this is not a bad book and it does give you an insight into her life but I can't help feeling that it could have been so much better and made much more appealing to the reader had it not just been page after page of letters to people.

 Brilliant

I bought this book for myself and have read it in no time because it is so fantastically funny. One tip do not read this book whilst on public transport as you will make a fool of yourself. It will have you laughing out loud - people will stare!! It is worth it though as it is such a good book. Amazing insight into her life and the challenges she must face in the public eye. Raw at times, truthful and very humerous in a typical dawn french way. I would highly recommend this book. A joy to read.
