When and how did the universe begin? Why are we here? What is the nature of reality? Is the apparent 'grand design' of our universe evidence for a benevolent creator who set things in motion? Or does science offer another explanation? In "The Grand Design", the most recent scientific thinking about the mysteries of the universe is presented, in language marked by both brilliance and simplicity. "The Grand Design" explains the latest thoughts about model-dependent realism (the idea that there is no one version of reality), and about the multiverse concept of reality in which there are many universes. There are new ideas about the top-down theory of cosmology (the idea that there is no one history of the universe, but that every possible history exists). It concludes with a riveting assessment of m-theory, and discusses whether it is the unified theory Einstein spent a lifetime searching for. This is the first major work in nearly a decade by one of the world's greatest thinkers.A succinct, startling and lavishly illustrated guide to discoveries that are altering our understanding and threatening some of our most cherished belief systems, "The Grand Design" is a book that will inform - and provoke - like no other.

 ** A Straw Looks Like A Straight Line From A Distance **

..if you think of it. Lay a straw on the table and stand back as far as possible and look, and it looks like a straight line. Get closer, and maybe change angles, and you can then see it has, in fact, 2 dimensions and not 1.

All will be explained in this book.

I love the way Stephen writes, and it's fair to say that I have read all of his books. I am not a stranger to Quantum Theory, and have studied this in some depth - however, the beauty of this writing is that it's aimed for anyone, and everyone, you don't need to have much prior knowledge at all, although if you have read his 'A Brief History Of Time' this will be an excellent follow up.

The book talks about reality, different idea's on time, realism..the list goes on.

You will really enjoy reading this, I seem to have completed this book very quickly :) As a fellow Oxford alumni, and FRSA, I wish I could meet Stephen, however, his writing is the closest I guess I will ever get.

Amazing!

 A Very Interesting Read

I read this whilst taking my Physics A-Level. And I found it extremely interesting. I had to take it in chunks as after too much it did make my brain start to ache a bit. But If you are looking to gain a well illustrated understanding of quantum theory and all the other fascinating nuggets of information that explain our universe; then buy this book. I anticipated it being all way over my head but it's all pretty fathomable. A good read.
