A new B-format paperback edition commemorating 75 years since the original publication of The Hobbit. Bilbo Baggins enjoys a quiet and contented life, with no desire to travel far from the comforts of home; then one day the wizard Gandalf and a band of dwarves arrive unexpectedly and enlist his services -- as a burglar -- on a dangerous expedition to raid the treasure-hoard of Smaug the dragon. Bilbo's life is never to be the same again. The Hobbit became an instant success when it was first published in 1937, and 75 years later Tolkien's epic tale of elves, dwarves, trolls, goblins, myth, magic and adventure, with its reluctant hero Bilbo Baggins, has lost none of its appeal.

I remember back when I was a kid, I booked out the Lord of the Rings book from my school library for a laugh - it was literally the biggest book there.

Of course I read about 5 pages and gave up. Since then, the film trilogy has been made and I realised I had never properly read a Tolkien book.

Whether you're 15 or 50, this book is just a joy to read. Because Tolkien wrote it primarily for his children, the way it is written makes it very easy to read, but it is by no means a 'children's book'.

I wish there were a thousand more stories about Bilbo and his adventures...

I religiously spent many nights snuggled up in bed reading this great book.

I just can't wait to see the film adaption. New Line & Peter Jackson you MUST resolve your issues. It would be a CRIME for Peter to not make this movie. You owe it to Tolkien himself.

Lets hope.

As for the book, Play are practically giving it away at £5 - Five pounds for a masterpiece, not bad eh?

It's a long time since I was a little girl and my memories of the stories I read and that were read to me then are mostly quite vague. A couple still stand out in my mind and The Hobbit is the most memorable. We all loved it. I clearly remember sitting quietly with my class of 7 year old chums, cross-legged on the classroom floor around our teacher, waiting for her to start reading the next instalment. We were on tenterhooks, wondering if Bilbo and the dwarfs would get away from the Trolls or the Goblins or the Spiders or the Elves ... . It was nerve-wracking and enthralling and we were all absolutely, 100% attentive: you could've heard a pin drop in that class between about 2.30 and 3.15pm during the weeks of The Hobbit. I read it by myself soon after that and I still read the book from time to time and listen to it on audiobook. The magic never dies. I wonder how many children Tolkien is responsible for getting hooked on reading. This really is a wonderful children's book and I recommend it for reading alone, reading together, reading to children and (if you're very lucky) having read to you.
