Not As Wicked - But A Good Read

| | See all Justafan's reviews (52)

After reading Wicked I was really looking forward to this sequel. Like the first, it seemed to take time for the story to gain a pace, but unlike the first, This one seemed to stop and start.
The story follows Elphaba's (Witch of the West's) 'Son' and his journey for the truth and self discovery. This may sound tedious to some but I assure you it isn't and we also get to catch up with some of the characters from the first book, as well as many new ones too.
It may not be as good as the first, but I still enjoyed it just the same and some of the possibilities that the book conjures up, really excites you at the possibilities of other visits to the land of Oz.
Come back to Oz, it may have changed but it's intriguing.

i was sooo looking forward to this book
like the first one it started really slow but soon speeded up.
how ever i feel a little bit cheated as the story in my opinion is unfinished as without giving too much away he doesnt find what he was looking for and we dont know what happend to key charactors along the way i.e trism and candle
also was surprised about his sexual encounter with trism where did that come from ???? was it a after thought slightly dissapointed would love Gregory maguire to finish the story .
I know it sounds like im moaning but seriously it is really good though disapointing
how ever i have just found out he is doing an other oz story this time based on the cowardly lion as a cub apparently elphaba saves him which seems a bit strange really as he never mentioned in wicked or son of a witch that he knew her lol

 Truly wicked

No disrespect to the other reviewers but the 'disappointment' in this book is no less than genius. In spite of the weird musical Wicked, Son of a Witch and Wicked the novels do not conform to Hollywood pretensions, which contribute to the overall charm and mystery of this wicked work. Macguire writes in an easier, fluid way in his second work, as if confident now that he can say what he wants, and to great effect. The ideas are not stunning, but I feel as though that is the point; he is not trying to write a Tolkien epic, but keep to the boundaries of agreed comment, while darkly dividing new scenes. Literarily, the characters have enormous depth, and the tale is as vivid and accessible as common reality. The constant reference to Elphaba was irritating, manifesting in one corny incident without much purchase, but other than that, the built relationships and the ones that dropped off the map entirely do not need further explanation. Overall, a wicked, excellent read.

 a good read

Like all the other reviews,i was left aching for more about the charcters from "wicked" but it is 10 years down the road and the new characters are just as good.It does leave you with a cliff hanger of an ending and hopefully these will all be ironed out in the third book about the cowardly lion.I remember a small piece about him in wicked so hoping it will be just as good as the others. This is a good read for all "wicked" fans!!

A good sequel but leaves questions unanswered

I was really looking forward to this book. The story overall is very good and a good sequel to Wicked. It explains a lot about Liir and his relationship to Elphaba, or lack thereof...however I was left with a feeling of disappointment, I thought more would happen at the end. I liked the introduction of Candle and even Trism, who later becomes Liir's lover. I think this is quite cool how Maguire pushed the envelope on Liir's character. I was hoping to find out more about Nor, Fiyero and what happened to Glinda- and I also wanted to know what happened to the Grimmerie. Hopefully the next book might explain more. A good read overall, but not Wicked. I would recommend this only if you are a massive Oz or Wicked fan like me.
