fantastic book. excellent stories and characters. couldn't put it down from cover to cover. the iron snakes have a distinctive fell of their own and have become one of my favourite chapters based on this book alone. brilliant.

As usual Dan Abnett proves himself to be a quality author of Warhamer 40000 material. True to form he has produced an exciting book, this time on an obscure Chapter of Space Marines.

One of the better stand alone books by far.

So i've been ploughing through the Black Librarys collection of 40k books and recently finished this one. It doesn't dissapoint and has been one of my favourites to date. Because...
The book stands out well mostly because of it's segmented story, rather than forcing you to follow through a block story as with some other 40k books *co...Ultramarines...ugh* which can grow tedious and force you to take breaks from reading, this book groups together a dozen small stories from Priads (main character) past upto the present, each always containing a vastly different world for you to imagine, often as well as entirely different foes from story to story. It's a refreshing pace to a 40k book as you don't want to put it down and you can read through a chapter, knowing that when you've finished and put the book down for a day or two that the next chapter you start to read will have the Iron Snakes somewhere completely different and exotic.
The writing is excellent, well described as if often with the 40k universe and there are very few inconsistences as with some of the other 40k authors books. (space marines being able to feel the wind through their hair when they're wearing helmets etc, small things but they can grate).
The first opening chapter/story had me weary of the the rest of the book because of the way Dan Abnett writes it...2nd person? not allowing the space marines dialogue, but once you get past that, if it doesn't bother you like it did me, then the rest is just excellent.

A worthy adeptus chapter to write of and done with great detail.
