With great power, there must also come great responsibility - and when those in power abuse it, it's the people's responsibility to remove them. The year is 1933, and New York City is not-so-secretly run by corrupt politicians, crooked cops, big businesses...and suave gangland bosses like New York's worst, the Goblin. But when a fateful spider-bite gives the young rabble-rouser Peter Parker the power to fight the mobster who killed his Uncle Ben, will even that be enough? It's a tangled web of Great Depression pulp, with familiar faces like you've never seen them before! This title is written by 'Hardboiled' David Hine, Fabrice 'The Spider' Sapolsky, and Carmine 'Carbine' Di Giandomenico! It collects "Spider-Man Noir", numbered 1-4.

A refreshing look into a "what if" world of Spiderman.

In the build up to the new Spiderman videogame, 'Spiderman Shattered Dimensions' I have been looking at the library of our web slinging hero. I came across Spider-Man: Noir an alternative time-line story set in the 1930's.
In this world, New York is in the midst of the depression and the Green Goblin is the criminal mob boss holding the strings to the city. Spiderman has changed from his iconic suit to don a mask and black trench-coat. One thing that strikes me about this mini series is the dark undertones. Fear, sorrow and corruption are the main themes, not even our web hero is without fault, as the story progresses the lines between good and evil are crossed reguarly and finally ends with an explosive outcome!
I read comics for fun and love exploring these alternate stories. For fans this mini-series offers a very unique insight into the world of Spiderman. The characters have taken new identites and it is exciting to see what new roles they play. In terms of the book it is quite short with only four issues out of eight being included, so they end it on a cliff hanger for readers to hunt down book two. The art is brilliant with full colour pages and oozes with realistic characters and landscapes.
In conclusion Spider-Man: Noir is a interesting graphic novel which leaves viewers wanting more for the Noir universe. For people who want more Spiderman they should check this out for an alternative look at our favourite webslinger.
