Tells the story of Vladek Spiegelman, a Jewish survivor of Hitler's Europe, and his son, a cartoonist coming to terms with his father's story. In this title, Vladek's harrowing story of survival is woven into the author's account of his tortured relationship with his aging father.

The Darkest Of Truths Told In A Bizarre Way

The holocaust isn't an easy subject to cover in anymeans, especially in the meidum of graphic novels, but art speigelman hit the nail on the head with this ground breaking piece. an upsetting and frank transcription of his fathers survival in auschwitz, the tale of running, hiding. brutality and survival isn't easier to take even with the pictures of mice, cats, pig and other animals replacing humans, its a bold and harsh subject matter in a strangely cute personification. one of the my most treasured purchases ever. maus is a true tale that will bring a tear to anyones eye.

 Gripping reading

Top 100 Music Reviewer

As my son is dyslexic it is very important for me to be able to find material that will suit his intellect and his reading skills. So it was fantastic to find a book that ticked every box. There is nothing infantile about it and it's a gripping read with a weighty subject matter to boot. That it won a Pulitzer is no surprise at all. Obviously this is not just for anyone who has reading issues, but if someone does have a son or daughter who has difficulties then this is a great jumping off point for them.

No other book can touch it.

As said inside the book. It is a common misconception that no one in their right mind can imagine or understand the holocaust.

Spiegelman disproves this in one of the most unsettling, gripping and genius drawing of cartoon characters. It deals with every single issue about the holocaust; survivors guilt, luck, logic, stereotypes, racism, anti-semitism, inhumane treatment by the Polish towards the Jews even after the war and so on.

Art Spiegelman is comepletely faultless in his delivery of this chillling tale, the comics serve their purpose and the over all personification and metaphor of the Jews works so amazingly convincingly.

A facinating point to note is that this is not entirely about the holocaust, but also its effects of Spiegelmans own life and is consistently cross referencing himself and his own feelings of guilt for no knowing what had happened to his mother and father.

I wholeheartedly believe this book is suitable for everyone as to teach that such acts of evil should never happen again.

 My Favourite Book

I've read many great books; To Kill A Mockingbird, 1984, Animal Farm, but this is by far my favourite. The way the author can take a subject that's been done hundreds of times already, and make it the most gripping and detailed account you'll ever read is so incredible, it's scary. I would recommend this book to anyone.

 Everybody should read this book.

I couldn't put this down. It can be fairly grueling, as you would expect, but Spiegelman artfully lightens the tone every once in a while, and produces a story that resonates with everyone. I think it's a must.
