"Cosa Nostra" is the compelling story of the Sicilian mafia, the world's most famous, most secretive and most misunderstood criminal fraternity. The mafia has been given many names since it was founded one hundred and forty years ago: the Sect, the Brotherhood, the Honoured Society, and now Cosa Nostra. Yet as times have changed, the mafia's subtle and bloody methods have remained the same. Now, for the first time, "Cosa Nostra" reconstructs the complete history of the Sicilian mafia from its origins to the present day, from the lemon groves and sulphur mines of Sicily, to the streets of Manhattan. "Cosa Nostra" is a definitive history, rich in atmosphere, and with the narrative pace of the best detective fiction, and has been updated to make it the most vital contemporary account of the mafia ever published. The mob genre has finally grown up.

If you are a fan of this subject matter then this is a must. From the lemon grove wars to today, this is almost an almanac that lets you piece together all the familiar names and families portrayed in the movies.

I totally agree with Consigliere about it's complexity so you'll need to stay alert and pay attention but the rewards are there.

 Indepth, heavy, essential!

This is one seriously indepth book exploring the origins of the La Cosa Nostra from the Sicilian way of life...and death.

Don't expect tales of modern day shake downs and extortion rackets. This book goes all the way back to the beginning when something as innocous as a simple vineyard was the stage for bloodshed. The writer is clearly an authority on the subject and throughout, the constant barrage of names, dates and facts will enlighten and educate. It can at times be very hard going and the sheer number of threads persisting through the book may confuse. I had to read it twice, but for this very reason remains the book's greatest strength. Never before has the mechanical manipulations of the 'Friends Of The Friends's been so exhaustively catalogued.

If you want to know the truth, be prepared to take the journey. It's a hard read but a rewarding one.
