From a childhood survivor of Cambodia's brutal Pol Pot regime comes a narrative of war crimes and desperate actions, the unnerving strength of a small girl and her family, and their triumph of spirit. Until the age of five, Loung Ung lived in Phnom Penh, one of seven children of a high-ranking government official. While her mother worried that she was a troublemaker, her beloved father knew Loung was a clever girl. When Pol Pot's Khmer Rouge army stormed into Phnom Penh in April 1975, Ung's family fled their home and moved from village to village to hide their identity, their education and their former life of privilege. Eventually, the family dispersed in order to survive. Because Loung was resilient and determined, she was trained as a child soldier in a work camp for orphans, while her other brothers and sisters were sent to labour camps. As the Vietnamese penetrated Cambodia and destroyed the Khmer Rouge, Loung and her surviving siblings were finally reunited. Bolstered by the shocking bravery of one brother and the vision of the others, and sustained by her sister's gentle kindness amid brutality, Loung forged on to create for herself a new life.

I actually bought this book whilst travelling around cambodia and having visited the genocide museum and killing fields etc this book gave an amazing insight into one girls real life experience at the hands of the khemer rouge. It was thought provoking and tear jerking throughout and since returning to the uk i have insisted my family and friends read this book and they too have been captivated from start to finish. i would highly recommend this book to anyone.

An incredible and very moving memoir.

I read this after my sister brought it back from Cambodia. This is the true story of a family's struggle under Khmer Rouge through the eyes of a 5 year old growing up. It is a very honest view and I rarely had a dry eye. A very moving memoir.

Started to read this book whilst doing a bit of travelling around Cambodia and got gripped by the horrifying history of the Khmer rouge regime. Loung Ung brings a graphic detailed picture of what happened to Cambodians during the genocide of the 70s. But my major problem with this book was the fact that a young girl of 5 years old could remember such a vivid picture by recalling dreams and the way her family members died. This is not to say the suffering injured by Cambodians during the regime was any less horrifying but read this with an open eye look at a 5 years old story.
