The stunning debut fantasy novel from author Peter V. Brett. The Painted Man, book one of the Demon Cycle, is a captivating and thrilling fantasy adventure, pulling the reader into a world of demons, darkness and heroes. Sometimes there is very good reason to be afraid of the dark...Arlen lives with his parents on their small farmstead, half a day's ride from the isolated hamlet of Tibbet's Brook. As dusk falls each evening, a mist rises from the ground promising death to any foolish enough to brave the coming darkness. For hungry demons materialize from the vapours to feed, and as the shadows lengthen, all of humanity is forced to take shelter behind magical wards and pray that their protection holds until the dawn. But when Arlen's world is shattered by the demon plague, he realizes that it is fear, rather than the monsters, which truly cripples humanity. Only by conquering their own terror can they ever hope to defeat the demons. Now Arlen must risk leaving the safety of his wards to discover a different path, and offer humanity a last, fleeting chance of survival. Voted one of the top ten fantasy novels of 2008 by amazon.co.uk.

I orderd this book from play.com seing that brett was a new author i'd never heard of before and i can't say how pleased i'am that i took that chance! It was a totally absorbing read and i found myself reading it whenever i had spare time- the indication of a truly great book. However my favourite element of the painted man is the way brett intertwines a story of loss, horror, magic, lust and love into one gripping novel that i would , without doubt recommend to any fantasy fan. :D

The Painted Man is the debut novel of Peter V Brett. Its a fantasy story which is definately more for adults then children.

There are quite a few characters to get to know and it took me a little bit of time to get into this novel. But once I knew the characters I soon started to enjoy the story.

Brett creates an exciting but quite dark world and I look forward to reading the sequel The Desert Spear. This is a very good debut by Brett.

 Surprising debut!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

I don't think the overall plot is particularly ground-breaking but the quality of the writing more than compensates for this with the pacing of the story also being very good. I look forward to reading the sequel.

I should also note that there are some quite adult themes and moments in this book which make it unsuitable for younger readers.

The story would also be perfect for a film version.
