Hitching rides is an unreliable mode of transport. In temperatures of over a hundred degrees, you're lucky if a driver will open the door of his airconditioned car long enough to let you slide you in. That's Jack Reacher's conclusion. He's adrift in the fearsome heat of a Texas summer, and he needs to keep moving through the wide open vastness, like a shark in the water. The last thing he's worried about is exactly who picks him up. He never expected it to be somebody like Carmen. She's alone, driving a Cadillac. She's beautiful, young and rich. She has a little girl who is being watched by unseen observers. And a husband who is in jail. Who will beat her senseless when he comes out. If he doesn't kill her first. Reacher is no stranger to trouble. And at Carmen's remote ranch in Echo County there is plenty of it: lies and prejudice, hatred and murder. Reacher can never resist a lady in distress. Her family is hostile. The cops can't be trusted. The lawyers won't help. If Reacher can't set things straight, who can?

Not the best Reacher novel, but still entertaining

Like the other reviewers, I have found this to be the weakest so far of the Jack Reacher thrillers. Taking that into account though, I don't think it should be dismissed outright.

The structure is almost like a classic western - stranger enters a dustbowl town, helps damsel in distress, rights a few wrongs then leaves - and I think it is this familiarity which causes most of the "seen it before" type comments below.

But this is still a Lee Child thriller, and despite a very (VERY) slow start - in fact, I would say at least 2/3 of the book are behind us before it really hits its top gear - the run-in is as thrilling and exciting as you would expect.

Worth a read, but not as a first Jack Reacher novel - try Killing Floor first.

 Brilliant

I have to disagree with all the other reveiwers because this is one of my favourite Reacher novels. A totally exciting and gripping novel to keep you on the edge of your seat. There is a fantastic clue who the bad guy is about half way through the book, but I'm ashamed to say I missed it!! Give this a try, I think you will be very impressed.

I have to admit, this book was just ok,out of the other reacher adventure's iv read, this is the weakest link! If you love reacher you have to buy it,but its not lee's best.

 Not so hot

Probably the weakest book in the Reacher series, the plot seems to drag and the conclusion is far too low-key to be satisfactory. Give this one a miss unless you are determined to read the whole series.

 I don't get the hype

Top 100 Books Reviewer

This is the first Lee Child book that I've read and I wasn't too impressed. Although this is a work of fiction, it still requires some realism, and in this book you might find at times, that it is like reading a Bollywood movie script. In the books' particualry ropey moments I could be heard saying "yea right" out loud.
"Echo Burning" follows the story of reluctant hero Jack Reacher helping a Damsel in distress called Carmen, and that is about it. The character of "Jack Reacher" has been done before, and done much better by other authors. I didnt like him, to me he was like a CIA wannabe extra from "Clear and Present Danger". It was predicable and unoriginal, however Child's skill with pace did make it mildly entertaining, If I had heeded my original foreboding when I first picked up the book, I would not have read it, but I wished to give the author a try. This original reluctance resulted from the last line of prose at the back of the novel, "The cops cant be trusted. The lawyers won't help. If Jack Reacher can't set things straight who can?" Oh dear.... I think that says it all. I will give lee Child another try, as so many reviewers can't be wrong, but I think I will steer clear of the Jack Reacher Novels.
