When a giant wave destroys his entire Nation - his family and everyone he has ever known - Mau finds himself totally alone. Until he meets Daphne, daughter of a colonial Governor and the sole survivor from a shipwreck. They have no common language, no common culture - but together they discover some remarkable things - like how to milk a pig and why spitting in beer is a good idea - and must try and forge a new kind of Nation. Then other survivors arrive to take refuge on the island, and not all of them are friendly...As can be expected from Terry Pratchett, the master story-teller, this new children's novel is both witty and wise, encompassing themes of death and nationhood, while being extremely funny. Mau's ancestors have something to teach us all. Mau just wishes they would shut up about it and let him get on with saving everyone's lives!

Aimed at kids, nothing there for the young or old.

Unfortunately I'm going to disagree with the other reviews on here with regards to this book. I only found out that this was aimed at younger readers after I bought it. This is a world away from the excellent discworld novels. I found nothing of interest in this book, it seems like a half baked idea that somebody else finished for Terry. I just didn't get it, it was dreary and slow from start to finish. Personally I'd suggest avoiding this book and sticking with the tried and tested books instead. Hey he's go plenty to choose from.

 Amazing!

This has to be one of my favorite Terry Pratchett novels! Being a childrens book, I thought it would not interest me(being 20) as much as, say, the discworld novels, but I was proved wrong! This book is fantastic! I was even suprised that it is aimed at children due to the extremely dark themes mainly throughout the start of the book. It is by far the darkest TP novel I've read! But also one of the best.
This really is a fantastic read, and would recommend it to both adults and children!
Buy it now! This is a must have!

 Brilliant

A truly fabulous book. I though it was a bit long and the first half dragged a little, but in the second half it goes from pretty okay to fantastic can't-put-it-down good. I highly recommend it.
