This is an amazing book and i would urge anyone to read it regardless of religious belief. This is one of my favorite books of all times and a heroic work i hope those secure enough to see the value of questioning their beliefs will be strong enough to give this book a go. Dawkins sums up my thoughts and opinions on religion so elegantly and beautifuly. He deserves to be listened to.
This is an excellent book and very interesting whether you believe in God or not. There are several very well argued points in this book which are very well put forward.
It is very clear that Richard Dawkins is a very intelligent man but is also aware that the audience for this book may not share his high intellect. To this end, most of the arguments in this book are explained in laymans terms.
This makes the book very accessible to everyone. I would recommend this book - it will make you think about your beliefs and belief systems in general.
It may not shake or change your beliefs in either direction. It may even re-inforce them but no matter what your religious standing this book deserves a place on your bookshelf.
A good read and a show of the truth....unlike ANY religion that claims itself righteous, to know all......isn't it funny how ALL religions claim to be right.....if their is a god he sure isn't any part christianity, Islam Judaism etc
In 'The God Delusion' Dawkins, once again, uses his smarmy, arrogant matrix of misrepresentation to motivate his obsession of getting the whole world to give up on faith and become militant atheists. This book is nothing other than hysterical propaganda bitterly expressed through a man that knows less about theology than penguins know about flying.
Dawkins uses his grotesquely misonformed ideas to justify why any religion should be abolished, and whilst he ignorantly ignores the good religion does (teaching generosity, self sacrifice, as well as meaning and purpose) he is quick to misinterpret the scriptures to conclude that believing in anything other than science or reason is "evil", and that beliving in atheism - a belief in pointlessness - is the way forward.
Preaching the way Dawkins does about topics he quite clearly doesn't understand is extremely dangerous and although he is quick to blame religion solely on the outbreak of any conflict or war, he - not surprisingly - doesn't have much to say on the atheist Nazi and Stalinist regimes (which have actually contributed to murder and genecide on an uncomparable scale.) Dawkins rallys us into refuting religion though, the irony a lot of people seem to miss is by misrepresenting religious groups the way Dawkins does, all he does is actively encourage religious intolerance and - if anything - THIS is what actually leads to conflict.
This book follows on from the series 'The Root of All Evil', where Dawkins is obviously threatened by the billions of people that hold any type of faith that he doesn't understand, and his attitude and motive for writing this declaration merely boils down to his xenophobia towards anything that exists outside the realms of scientific explanation.
So, I didn't like it.
Although it is sometimes interesting to see what festers inside Dawkin's head, but you've really got to take this book with a bit more than a pinch of salt.
People of faith are unlikey to care much for this book. Fact and faith do not sit well together. Faith is simply the uncritical acceptance of something you cannot prove. The notion of 'God' is no more believable than the possibilty that my cat grows wings and flies around the house at night whilst smoking a cigar.
Dawkins is sound in his work and I am not suprised that he is disliked by certain persons of various religious communities, they are unquestionably deluded in their belief. Stating that over a billion people believe in god etc does not make it any more credible or bolster the arguement for a god.
You require proof and as such will never have it! Let us awake and embrace the scientific age, understand that life is random, varied and we as intelligent, critical thinking beings are a fluke and as random in our creation as the universe itsself.
Have a read it makes more sense than the bible ( I have not read all the religious books as one was enough fantasy for me!)
Tally ho!
