A stunning wartime classic. In the deadly chaos of the First World War, one horse witnesses the reality of battle from both sides of the trenches. Bombarded by artillery, with bullets knocking riders from his back, Joey tells a powerful story of the truest friendships surviving in terrible times. 'The bedlam of battle had begun. All around me men cried and fell to the ground, and horses reared and screamed in an agony of fear and pain. The shells whined and roared overhead, and every explosion seemed like an earthquake to us.' One horse has the seen the best and the worst of humanity. The power of war and the beauty of peace. This is his story.

 Enjoyable read

Having seen the play in the west end first i thought i must read the book, this does differ abit from the play but still a enjoyable read it tells the story through the horse's eyes (joey) and tells of the horrors of pointless war,and the suffering of the animals who were dragged in to it through no fault of their own, where as the play brings the story to life with fantastic 'puppets' of full size horse's which are trully stunning and i doubt if anyone left the theatre without a tear in their eye.
The book can still bring a tear to your eye if you have a heart that is.

A beautiful story of an enduring friendship

This is a beautifully written book about the bonds between a horse called Joey and the humans and horses he encounters during his life. Set in the first world war, we see, through Joey's eyes, the hardship endured by both humans and animals. Morpurgo writes about this harrowing subject with care and sensitivity and although there are sad parts within the story, he does not dwell on them unnecessarily. An absolute joy to read for adults and children alike.

both my daughter and myself enjoyed reading this book about Joey. It made my daughter understand that animals can suffer through war.. its a really touching story told through the eyes of the horse. it made us feel like we were right by Joeys side throughtout and willing him on when the going got rough.. its a book that we both can read over and over again.. my daughter even seen the play on stage in london and we both can't wait to see the film once its been released..

WarHorse, a story of a horse at war.

It's a story about a horse called joe when he's sent to war, it's a boring book and repeats its self over & over again. My advice is don't buy this book & look for a better ones like darren shan books, their brill.
