Science starts to get interesting when things don't make sense. Even today there are experimental results that the most brilliant scientists can neither explain nor dismiss. In the past, similar anomalies have revolutionised our world: in the sixteenth century, a set of celestial irregularities led Copernicus to realise that the Earth goes around the sun and not the reverse. In "13 Things That Don't Make Sense" Michael Brooks meets thirteen modern-day anomalies that may become tomorrow's breakthroughs. Is ninety six percent of the universe missing? If no study has ever been able to definitively show that the placebo effect works, why has it become a pillar of medical science? Was the 1977 signal from outer space a transmission from an alien civilization? Spanning fields from chemistry to cosmology, psychology to physics, Michael Brooks thrillingly captures the excitement and controversy of the scientific unknown.

Interesting read with a varied quality level

The book makes an interesting read and is light enough to make good bed-time reading. I personally found the quality in the treatment of subjects varied:

Physics and astrology: I found the chapters on these topics to be the highlight of the book. I am not a physicist myself so the attraction might hvae come from the accessible treatment of the subjects.

Biology: Topics tackled in an insightful way, but not in a manner which I found sufficiently deep or satisfying. It really gave me the impression that there could have been more to go into.

Psychology: This is my subject matter and I was completely let down in the treatment of subjects like the placebo effect. The treatment was higly superficial and lacking in depth.

Overall I would recommend this as a read to the lay person interested in science topics, however for anyone interested in depth rather than breadth this will prove to be a limited (but enjoyable) read.

 AMAZING

I totally agree...this book is an amazing trip into the scientific anomalies of our time, be them true or not. Everything is explained in a really comprehensible way. The balance in each chapter is giving by the explanatory backing up that the author makes without reaching boredom. The book in fact, is a real page turner and it is not only enjoyable, but also very very instructive. While reading one can learn not only about the anomalies but also about many other scientific facts. Moreover, some of the main problematic matters are described by showing all sides of the argument, each of which is also objectively presented. As a result the reader can chose whether to believe or not a particular anomaly is actually true.

 Well worth a look

I've just finished reading this book, and have enjoyed it from cover to cover. The author writes with a balance level of scepticism and enthusiasm for the topic, and draws the reader into the "13 things" very well. Most encouraging, after reading this book, I am keen to re-read a number of similar books and have been inspired to read others on similar topics. It also encourages the reader to take all authors opinions with an open mind, and to explore theorys and suggestions for themselves ... There is no such thing as science fact!
