I loved this book so much I began reading it a couple of days before I went on holiday. (I bought it as a holiday read) It was so addictive I read most of it even before I left. I actually finished it at the airport waiting for my flight and was so shocked and upset by it I abandoned the book in the loos as I couldn't even look at it. This may sound like an over-reaction, but it just goes to show how powerful this book is and how well written too. Had I not have been so attached to the characters and what happened to them then I wouldn't have cared so much.
If you enjoy reading a book with an unexpected twist and non "commerical" , or for a better word realistic rather than idealistic read then get this book. If you are someone who wants a 'fluffy' holiday style read perhaps give this one a miss.
this book is an amazing read. loved the beginning and middle but the ending upset me. I don't agree that it should have ended that way at all. took me weeks to recover and even now i still cant read it all cos i absolutely hate the ending. spoils the whole book. I recommend to read but you'll be disappointed with the end!!!!
A true classic, I feared this has been overhyped by the media, but this book is just fantastic. I am a big fan of Nick Hornby and this takes a style not far away and reads wonderfully. Gripped from the outset to the last page and true masterpiece. One of the few books to have blown me away.
I'm not big on these types of books but bought after recommendation from a friend and i am so glad i did.
It is an interesting idea following the two characters from university into middle age telling the story of the same date each year.
The characters are very well developed throughout and you cannot help becoming attached. Along with the passage of time from the late eighties onwards creates a very nostalgic feel for the reader.
It is extremely well written throughout, the thought processes of the characters, the dry wit, the awkwardness of some situations and the feelings of the characters all filter through to the reader.
There aren't many books that can say they are all these things, but "One day" certainly is!
I absolutely adored this book, one of the best books I have read (I still can't stop thinking about it!) Brilliantly written the story is captivating, "Dex" and "Em" are believable characters, and I like the way the book tells the story from both their points of you.
Heartbreaking at times, (this is the first time ever that a book has litteraly brought a tear to my eye).
Definately one of the books of the year! I loved it, if you only buy one book this year, make it this one, GREAT STUFF !!!!!!!
