This is the first batman i have read, aware that Frank Millar is the boss i bought this to find a new area of reading. Anihoo this is really good, better than the film, i found the best parts were based around Gordon, his a really good story. Overall its pretty much perfect, the arts lovely, its a good length and weight, and it smells really good.

Frank miller made this novel to be honest you just know its going to be awesome. This shows you how batman really began it shows you how much he struggled at first not only physically but mentally too plus it shows you how police felt towards him at first. You will see how batman puts him selft to the test for the first time! Basically get it read it and you will see because i cant really tell you how awesome it really is. i Believe that everyone that likes batman should read this frist then start their collection off. If you have a batman collection put this first then put batman returns at the end with all your other batman books in the middle then you will see how perfect it is in your collection!

Top 100 Books Reviewer

Here it is the story of how Batman began as a super hero in Gotham City. This magnificant tale by frank Miller is easily on a par with his other great Batman creation Dark Knight Returns. Some would even say that Batman Year One is better as it stays within continuity while Dark Knight Returns takes place on an alternative Universe. Regardless if you liked the film Batman Begins this is the book for you as much of the film was adapted from this graphic novel. One word of warning though, if you're expecting super-villains you will be disapointed. This is a return to Batmans routes that pits him against mob-bosses and corrupt city officials just like when Batman started way back in the Golden Age. Essential for any Batman fan.

Customer rating: 4 out of 5 stars A great origin story for the Dark Knight.

Year One is a different Batman story. It shows us how he trained, prepared and eventually donned the cape and cowl for the first time.

It focuses on realism and the relationship between Batman and Jim Gordon and it is worth reading. A great story that influenced Christopher Nolan for the Batman origin film "Batman Begins".

It contains moderate violence and horror.

Customer rating: 5 out of 5 stars Possibly the best Batman story

This is an origin story. Not just of Bruce Wayne into Batman but also the start of James Gordon as a cop in Gotham City and how they are linked from the very start.
Both Batman and Gordon have their own separate battles as they struggle to get a foothold in Gotham as well as crossing each others paths and the problems that generates for each other.
The artwork also matches the story so well.
Perfect for someone looking to start a Batman or graphic novel collection or anyone who just hasn't read it yet.

Frank Miller further proves he's a comic book genius i recommend you buy this. The price is great and the story is incredible it answers so many questions and as other reviewers have said Chris Nolan got a lot of his ideas for Batman Begins from this although i must say i don't think he did the comic justice.

Customer rating: 5 out of 5 stars a great start

dark, mean - everything I wanted batman to be. Interesting to see where they got most of the Chris Nolan movie from.

This is a very gripping, interesting and detailed graphic novel. It gives you a great insight into Batman's origins and features the legendary Jim Gordon aswell. The artwork and storyline come together beautifully to present us with an exciting, original novel.

A great read and a must-have for any comic book/batman fan!

I've gone out on a limb here, and have to say that if just want to read a comic about what the Dark Knight is really about, read Year One!

Better still, read Year One, and then DKR immediately afterwards, you'll witness Batman in his Begins (origin) phase, and then later, seeing a futuristic but still crime infected Gotham City, after Bruce Wayne's retirement, when indeed, the Dark Knight is compelled to return.

Year One is simply told, but Miller and Mazzuchelli tell it so well. There are no villains and no Robin, but it only serves to make the story more gritty and fat free, solely concentrating on Batman's early days starting out.

But it's the details that really stand out, and not just details in the artwork. Miller's story has an earthy realistic edge to it, giving space for characters like Jim Gordon to breathe, even seeing him having a fling, and never making a man dressed as a Bat unbelievable. Chris Nolan would later adopt the same realistic setting for Begins and The Dark Knight. It's groundbreaking in it's approach, and thoroughly deserves the reputation that it has gathered.

I have never been a comic book reader, but have always admired and appreciated the artwork that went into them. Thought this would be a good place to start, particularly as Batman is a favorite character - fan of the films and animation - and I wasn't disappointed. Some iconic images here, and a realistic take on the genesis of the character. The only problem with graphic novels is that they don't last long enough!

Note - Playtrade seller pbshopatplay didn't actually have the book in stock, and refunded my payment. Not sure why they are listing it if it is not in stock.
