Alistair Urquhart was a soldier in the Gordon Highlanders captured by the Japanese in Singapore. He not only survived working on the notorious Bridge on the River Kwai , but he was subsequently taken on one of the Japanese 'hellships' which was torpedoed. Nearly everyone else on board died and Urquhart spent 5 days alone on a raft in the South China Sea before being rescued by a whaling ship. He was taken to Japan and then forced to work in a mine near Nagasaki. Two months later a nuclear bomb dropped just ten miles away ...This is the extraordinary story of a young man, conscripted at nineteen and whose father was a Somme Veteran, who survived not just one, but three very close separate encounters with death - encounters which killed nearly all his comrades.

A remarkable story of courage and a must read

My late Father spent all his war as a prisoner of the Imperial Japanese Army on the Death Railway and died young on his return to the UK because of his ill treatment. I have had the honour of knowing a number of former POW`s who have told their accounts of the horrific treatment they had to endure. This book is well written in a way all would understand. It tells the tale of Alistairs upbringing in a caring and supportive family before he found himself in terrible circumstances peopleof today would not comprehend. He also had to return to a country who would sooner forget about this period of history than support him and his colleagues. His strength of character clearly stands out with his need to concentrate at all times on raw survival. How any of the men survived is beyond belief. I hope this book sells well. It deserves too. I could not put it down.

 Truly remarkable

My grandfather was also a Gordon Highlander in WWII, and also captured to work on the "Death Railway". He never, until the day he died, spoke of his time as a POW to us grandchildren only to his son, my father.
The horrific treatment these men (not only Gordon Highlanders but to all those who were forced to work in the conditions detailed) suffered, is so in-humane, it's almost untrue. But the fact is, it isn't and it happened to thousands of servicemen.
I paid a visit to the Bridge over the River Kwai and to Hellfire Pass last year as tribute to my grandfather who was lucky to survive at the hands of the Japanese Army. What an experience. It opened my eyes to something so serious, that seems to have been kept "under wraps" for all these years. This book also opened by eyes even more, as Alistair describes the true horror that existed in the Japanese War Camps and his survival!

A brilliant read!!!!!!

I read this book and thoroughly enjoyed it, eventhough I have read about the way the Japanese treated our men, this story really bought it home. I think this book should be read to our children in school so that the next generation can remember and realise what heros all their grand father were.

 A real eye opener

Not my usual choice of read, but from the reviews it had, i started to read and could not put down. An amazing recollection from a true hero, how anyone could survive that i'll never know....i know i wouldn't!

 brilliant read.
