This book is simply fantastic. Characters are believable and develop as the book goes on. This is a book that will hook you till the very last page. If you are looking to get involved with science fiction then this is a must read. Complety easy to get into. And you will find it thrilling, inventive, and in some case down right funny and clever.

May i make it clear from the off, those people who think just because this is a warhammer novel it's not worthy of reading, you are so wrong !, this is one if not the best science fiction series i have ever read, and i've read lots with the best included, dan abnett simply does action brilliantly, i've not come across a sf writer who does it better, also his character building is up their with the best also, this series grips you so you need to get the next one straight away, and it does'nt have a weak book so far (i think their's been about 12 or so), a must read for all sf fans, not just gw fans, simply awesome

As one of the later omnibus's I read, I was speculative on what I might find. I had not read any Imperial Guard novels before, believing them to lack the vividness and brutality of other novels featuring superhuman Space Marines fighting daemons and aliens. Boy, was I wrong.

The Founding is one of the best sets of Black Library novels I have read to date, if not the best. Its a close competition between this and Eisenhorn, another of Abnett's omnibus's. With tons of detail, fantastic characters and enough brutality to make most 18 rated films look like childrens movies, The Founding delivers on all levels as a in-depth and fascinating look at warfare in the Warhammer 40,000 universe, where simple men stand against the greatest horrors of the universe.

Recommended to ALL Warhammer 40k fans, both new and old, and any science fiction fans with a penchant for brutal war and complex characters.

From the beginning of Dan Abnetts career with the black library 'the founding' incorporates the first three gaunts ghosts novels, 'First and only', 'Ghost maker' and 'Necropolis' - the omnibus edition also includes the previously unreleased short story 'In rememberance'.
The founding is excellent and even though it is from early on in abnetts career it is not found wanting. The story developes well and has excellent characters, simply a book that must be read.

If your looking to take your first step into the Warhammer:40,000 world, then this is the book for you. Your in the story, your firing that lasgun and moving down chaos with your chainsword. Its so realistic. A great buy considering the price and the Author.
