Hundreds of years in the future, after the Something that Happened, the world is an alarmingly different place. Life is lived according to The Rulebook and social hierarchy is determined by your perception of colour. Eddie Russett is an above average Red who dreams of moving up the ladder by marriage to Constance Oxblood. Until he is sent to the Outer Fringes where he meets Jane - a lowly Grey with an uncontrollable temper and a desire to see him killed. For Eddie, it's love at first sight. But his infatuation will lead him to discover that all is not as it seems in a world where everything that looks black and white is really shades of grey ...If George Orwell had tripped over a paint pot or Douglas Adams favoured colour swatches instead of towels ...neither of them would have come up with anything as eccentrically brilliant as Shades of Grey.

 Genius

One of the most original, inventive and intriguing books I have ever read. It takes a while to get used to the concept of colour perception, but once you get there, each turn of the page has something new and exciting for you. Dry humour, and some extremely clever puns and twists on our modern society. A colourful read, in more ways than one! Sometimes requires you to think and ponder over an idea before you understanding, which juts drags you further into the future world.

As usual, Fforde does not disappoint!

I am only on the fourth or fifth chapter of this new and as usual bizarre world created by Jasper Fforde and cannot wait to finish work and head home to read more! Fforde ALWAYS makes you want the best for the main character and I have already fallen in love with Eddie Russett in this novel. Fforde's wacky genius never ceases to surprise and inspire me and make me want to visit all of his weird and wonderful creations!

 Absolutely fantastic read

I am half way through this book and absolutely addicted. What a fantastically funny book. Highly entertaining, and a complete surpise. A customer in a bookshop recommended this to me and I would so much like to thank her for suggesting it. I will definately be reading more of FFordes books, what great perceptions and ideas. Absolute genius.
