True love can last an eternity...Have you ever loved someone so much that you'd do anything for them? When Dr Luke Findley turns up to his hospital shift in the small town of St Andrews, Maine, he's expecting just another evening of minor injuries and domestic disputes. But instead, Lanore McIlvrae walks into his life - and changes it forever. For Lanny is a woman with a past...Lanny McIlvrae is unlike anyone Luke has ever met. Hers is a story of love and betrayal that defies time and transcends mortality - and cannot end until Lanny's demons are finally put to rest. Her two hundred years on this earth have seen her seduced by both decadence and brutality - but through it all she has stayed true to the one true love of her life. Until now. An unforgettable novel about the power of unrequited love to elevate and sustain, but also to blind and ultimately destroy, "The Taker" is an immortal love story on an epic scale...

Don't be put off by the cover or the black page edges

I was slightly embarrassed reading this book in public due to the cover and the black edged pages. I felt that people may think I was reading a dark erotic thriller. This book is not in that category though there were numerous sex scenes.

I actually really enjoyed the story and was sorry to finish the book. The characters were very real and even though much of the action took place in the early 1800s I still enjoyed it. Generally I don't go in for books set in the older days and I certainly don't seek out love stories. I read the book through a book club. The blurb and the cover art work put me off but I decided to give it a chance. I'm glad I did. I enjoyed it so much more than I expected.

Alchemy is used to explain where the "potion" that yields immortality came from. The character that gives people immortality is intriguing. The main character Lanore (Lanny) goes through a great transformation from a Puritan to a Courtesan. It was an engaging journey.

 A great read!

To be honest reading the back cover and the black pages put me off reading the book. But dont let that deter you from reading this book. It is a great book.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading the book and really got into the characters. The mix between modern times and the 1800's was well balanced and made it a really interesting read. The plot was really good and a great theme.

The book could have ended in several ways and I must admit that the end was a little disappointing, I thought a different ending may have been good but I also think there is an opportunity to have a sequel.

A really great read!

 Absolutely Brilliant !!

Top 100 Books Reviewer

This book hasn't really been advertised, and I can't for the life of me understand why, the whole "supernatural" genre is so popular at the moment, that I really am surprised this isn't really popular, because it certainly should be!

One of the best in it's genre that I have read, and refreshingly different too. The story is based around imortals (but not the usual Vampire's) This had undertones of Anne Rice's "Interview with a Vampire" it had the same sort of feel. I loved the way the book starts present day, and then works backwards and re-tells the story of how we arrive there.

This is the first of a trilogy and I can't wait for the next, this is the author's debut novel, and I have to say it didn't show, such was the level of her writing, each character within the book could quite easily be interesting as a book all on their own.

The book is left quite clearly leaving the way for the reader to want to know more about (Lanny), but yet wraps everything up within the book so you're not left dangling!

Absolutely brilliant, if you like, Tru Blood / Twilight etc. don't miss this book, it's that good!!

This book was really weird at first, really didn't know what it was about. Then it started getting really weird and I was gripped. Will make a great film.
