A top Mafia hitman as well as a doting father, for 30 years, Richard 'the Ice Man' Kuklinski led a double life beyond anything ever seen on "The Sopranos", becoming one of the most notorious professional assassins in American history while hosting neighbourhood barbecues in suburban New Jersey. Kuklinski was Sammy 'the Bull' Gravano's partner in the killing of Paul Castellano at Sparks Steakhouse. John Gotti hired him to kill the neighbour who accidentally ran over his child. He was also intimately involved in the killing of Jimmy Hoffa. He conducted this sadistic business with cold-hearted intensity, never disappointing his customers. For an additional price, he would make his victims suffer. By his own estimate, he killed over 200 men, taking enormous pride in his cunning and the ferocity of his technique. Several years after police brought Kuklinski to justice in 1986, he agreed to sit for a series of interviews with a documentary filmmaker. The chilling results aired in three hugely successful documentaries. "New York Times" writer John O'Connor said, 'Few viewers are ever likely to forget this thoroughly chilling portrait. As for possible movie competition, it would work on the level of "The Silence of the Lambs".' Philip Carlo spent hundreds of hours with Kuklinski, his wife and his daughters, as well as with police and underworld sources. This research has resulted in an intimate and definitive portrait of a killer in the groundbreaking tradition of Peter Maas' bestselling biography of "Sammy the Bull", "Underboss", or Nicholas Pileggi's "Wiseguy".

Quite simply one of the best books I've ever read. As other reviewers have said, very hard to put down. A brilliantly written book.

Quite simply brilliant. Carlo tells the story at just the right pace. This book is really unputdownable. I managed to read it in 2 sittings. How I ended up feeling some sympathy for a psychopath shows how well written this is. This is one book that could never be done justice by film.

 the best book i've read!

Put a new word in the dictionary to describe this book, "unputdownable".
Great insight into how and why this man became a totally sadistic killer, wife beater and family man. I actually found myself feeling sorry for him at the end and part of me wanted him not to get caught. I would recommend this publication to anyone.
Once I read the book I had a look at the recordings of him on youtube and he is just like you imagine him throughout the book.
