Some say that the first hint that Bill Bryson was not of Planet Earth came when his mother sent him to school in lime-green Capri pants. Others think it all started with his discovery, at the age of six, of a woollen jersey of rare fineness. Across the moth-holed chest was a golden thunderbolt. It may have looked like an old college football sweater, but young Bryson knew better. It was obviously the Sacred Jersey of Zap, and proved that he had been placed with this innocuous family in the middle of America to fly, become invisible, shoot guns out of people's hands from a distance, and wear his underpants over his jeans in the manner of Superman. being situated in the fifties and sixties in the united states, this semi-autobiography pictures the life and times of people in that era. and it gives insight in the historical little things that made life so good back then, living (in) the american dream.
but aside of the funny historical information you get, above all bryson is a very gifted storyteller: edgy, satirical, critical as well. and with an enormous sense of humour.
what a good read indeed.
as this was my introduction into the world of bill bryson, i certainly look forward to read more of his novels (wich are highly recommended if you read the reviews).
I'm not much of a keen reader but was recommended to have a go at this one; an account of the author's childhood.
This is my first time reading anything by Bill Bryson and without question it will not be my last. It's fantastic!
It's easy to tell Bryson is a master wordsmith - the way the book flows makes it difficult to put down and i finished it in 3 visits - approximately 230 visits quicker than the last book I read.
Warning! do not read this book if you have a bladder weakness.
Bill Bryson, licensed to make us all laugh hysterically.
I have to say I was a bit skeptic at first. I had never read anything for Billy Bryson before, and the back of the book didnt sound too appealing... I'm spanish, and normally the stuff I read in english it's really light stuff... mainly chick lit... (not proud of it, but not ashamed either) so the biography... well.. it was summer and didnt feel like it... but i had ran out of books, so i gave it a go... And boy am i glad i did!! Its a superb book, so funny and interesting... as others have mentioned before you WILL find yourself laughing at things you have never considered funny at all.. but his writing makes this possible.. It's a great read (summer or non).
My second Intro to Bryson and while not as good as Walk in the Woods by no means a poorer cousin! Fantastic stories, interesting from start to finish. A book that is hard to put down. Again, with all the Bryson Books I `ve read thus far, it draws you in and you don`t want to put it down!!
