I wasn't sure what to expect but I thoroughly appreciate the points raised in this book and thought it delivered a clear message through a great story.

  Lifechanging!!

I was pointed in the direction of this book whilst going through a particular bad time and the messages given throughout the pages spoke to me loud and clear giving me the strength and courage to pursue my dream!!
Truly amazing!!

It comes a cross as a poorly written self-help book for children/teens (in all fairness, that could be due to the English translation): follow your dreams and search for your treasure which (guess what) is right in front of you, yada yada yada. Bah. This book is an overly simplistic, self-indulgent and repetitive load of religious mumbo-jumbo written in the style of a modern-day fairy tale, of sorts. It is beyond me how it became a best-seller any why anyone are actually able to enjoy it. I wonder how many of the +30 mio. people who got sucked into buying and reading this book (such as myself) actually enjoyed it. I want my money and time back mr. Coelho!

  Overrated " " " " Best seller " " " " (Seriously??)

Good tale, easy to understand. Not life changing. Not overly interesting. No suspense.

In brief, Boring

The Alchemist seems to fall into that category of books that people either get a lot out of or absolutely nothing at all. It's the story of a young man finding his way in the world, overcoming obstacles and ultimately following his dreams. I love the book myself and have read it several times. It's like a bedtime story for adults and is so easy to read you will finish it in no time. I think as various reviews suggest it's not a book for everyone and I wonder if disappointment comes from the high expectations placed on it by its own success and from people claiming it has changed their lives. The truth is I think it probably has changed my outlook in quite a subtle positive way but if you pick this book up thinking it's a self help book or expecting a profound change you may be left wondering what all the fuss is about. It's a warm, comforting story for generations finding themselves increasingly adrift from their dreams and questioning their belief systems. I think if you read it for what it is you will be surprised at how much you get out of it...

i was given this book by a friend who had told me how wonderful it was and how it had changed her life. on finnishing this novel i did not feel spiritually up lifted or feel that it had given me new direction or would change my life in any way. The novel its self is a nice tale and easy to read but is way over hyped.

It's about the read. Absorbing. Easy to read. A wonderment.

After being given this book by a spanish friend of mine i delved into its depth rather quickly compared to others i have read. The story is simple and well written but delivers a powerful message which makes you think. If you only ever read one book in your life; make it this.
