Loved this book, was the first james patterson book I have read & it didn't disappoint! I was hooked from begining to end, would definately reccommend reading this book. Cant wait to read next book in the alex cross series!

Good Story, shame about the writing.

It sounds like I'm the only one who doesn't think this is a work of genius. This is the first Patterson novel I have read and I bought it as I'd seen JP's books advertised alongside titles I had enjoyed from other authors. The book is OK, the underlying story is good and I got through it in a couple of days whilst on holiday. In spite of that I have to say I find Patterson's writing style horribly clichéd, smothered in cheese and, at points, annoyingly condescending. Is it really necessary to constantly call a character by both their aliases? Even when supposedly referring to them in a conversation? I found myself thinking "I get it, for goodness sake! Get on with it" Patterson has made sure every breadcrumb of plot is hammered home just in case the novel is in any danger of creating some suspense or surprises.
The chapters are very short and told form the points of view of several characters, the Alex Cross sections are by and large fine but when other characters take centre stage the prose turns into the sort of nonsense you'd expect from a GCSE English assignment where the characters internal monologue says things like "it's hard being a super sexy FBI agent, especially in this work-a-day, male dominated world. Still I've worked hard to get to the top...but do I have a secret that I just can't tell yet? Stay tuned readers!!"
This isn't the worst book I've read by any stretch (i'm looking at you "Flight from Deathrow" by Harry Hill), but I do find myself wondering whether I'm the target audience for this. The cover screams "Phenomenal international #1 bestseller" but perhaps should add "...for teenagers". As I say, It does have a good storyline but it suffered with a hackneyed writing style, laughable pop-culture references and unnatural conversation. There is an assumption that the reader needs everything explained 20 times and introduction of social issues and racism in early 90s Washington just felt out of step with the plot. I might give some other James Patterson novels a try but not anytime soon.

 Great Books

Loved this book, I'm not usually a fan of thriller books but James Patterson is a legend. I would recommend this to anyone, kept me gripped all the way - until two o'clock in the morning at one point. I have read the first four books in the Alex Cross series and enjoyed them all.
A real page turner!

 Wonderful read!

I saw this book and, after reading Maximum Ride, wasn't sure about it. I am so pleased that I did get a copy of it because it is quite simply excellent. It had me gripped throughout two whole days and I was amazed at how much I preferred it to Maximum Ride. I couldn't stop turning the pages and I was thrilled. A great start to the series!

 Brilliant Introduction Of Alex Cross.

Great book from start to finish.
incredibily fast paced stuff from patterson, fast chapters that always finish on a hook, a real page turner.
