The comfortable world of Martris Drayke, second son of King Bricen of Margolan, is shattered when his older half-brother, Jared, and Jared's dark mage, Foor Arontala, kill the king and seize the throne. Tris is the only surviving member of the royal family aside from Jared the traitor. Tris flees with three friends: Soterius, captain of the guard; Carroway, the court's master bard; and Harrtuck, a member of the royal guard. Tris harbors a deep secret. In a land where spirits walk openly and influence the affairs of the living, he suspects he may be the mage heir to the power of his grandmother, Bava K'aa, once the greatest sorceress of her age. Such magic would make Tris a Summoner, the rarest of magic gifts, capable of arbitrating between the living and the dead.

Nothing really new, but it is well done

I enjoyed this read, and perhaps my opinion is a little jaded (I've read a LOT of fantasy over the years) but I just found that there seemed to be "nothing new" as such. I admit Fantasy is a genre which has not changed the rules really for over 100 years, so I think most books come down to how good a writer the author is. Fortunately Gail Z. Martin is a good steady writer with an easily readable prose that won't leave you mentally tired. The story is lively with good believeable characters and a suitabley dislikeable bad guy. In all its an above average read that any true fantasy fan should dip into.
Get it if: You like fantasy a bit easier to read than say "Lord of the Rings", but still with a story that will pull you in.
Don't get it if: You're expecting something new and innovative, you're a hardcore fantasy fan who likes lots of plot weaving and twisting turns.

Paint by numbers fantasy, but the lines have been followed

Top 100 Books Reviewer

Has all the ingredients classic epic fantasy asks for, dead king, check, exiled prince, check, crazy evil wizard, check, talking ghosts, well you get the point, all in all though it is all well put together and the writer cannot be flawed for her writing skills, just her imagination, events go along at a pretty leisurely pace throughout with the prince (Martris Drayke) collecting his entourage as he tries to escape the clutches of his mad brother and wizard enemies, some elements are handled well such as the combat and the prince's discoveries about his own powers of wizardry, but this will be comparatively boring for most fantasy fans who have been reading for years the likes of George RR or Steven Erikson, or fans of new fantasy of the likes of Joe Abercrombie, for new readers of old school fantasy

 Brilliant

A gripping story full of action, adventure and laughter. I enjoyed this series so much i've read it twice! Love all the characters especially Jonmarc Vahanian. Can't wait till The Dread comes out Feb 2012

Gives a completely new sense for the meaning of a necromancer.

The ideas and twists to the book give it a unique look to the world and keeps you in tune with every character!

A must read for any necromancer lovers :)
