Set before and during the great war, Birdsong captures the drama of that era on both a national and a personal scale. It is the story of Stephen, a young Englishman, who arrives in Amiens in 1910. Over the course of the novel he suffers a series of traumatic experiences, from the clandestine love affair that tears apart the family with whom he lives, to the unprecedented experiences of the war itself.

 The best WW1 novel

Birdsong has to be one of the greatest novels ever written and certainly the best world war one novel. It's a work of art, Sebastian Faulks depiction of the war and it's themes of violence, death, comradeship, compassion and love are perfect.

 Tremendous work

I could not put this book down, it has everything, love, tension, fear, heartbreak, pain and suffering, it depicts the terror in the trenches in a shockingly realistic way. It is one of those books you have to read in your lifetime.

 the best novel ever written

I have just finished reading this book for the second time and I am in love with it even more the second time around. It is beautifully written and deals with the horrors of the Great War in a way as to not romanticise or glorify it, but by dealing with the emotions and the friendships at the front. Faulk's prose is stunning and takes you on a journey with the characters. I urge anyone to read it.

 WOW!

This is a truely magnificent novel; moving, heart rendering, charming and evocative. This is quite clearly the best novel of the last century. This must be read, studied, and cherished by every man, woman and child!!
