After her resignation as Virginia's Chief Medical Examiner and the horrifying events which threatened her life in THE LAST PRECINCT, Kay Scarpetta has abandoned her elegant home in Richmond and is quietly living in Florida, beginning to get some balance back in her life and slowly establishing herself as a private forensic consultant. But her past won't let her rest, and her grief for Benton Wesley continues to grow, not diminish, as does the rage within Lucy, her niece. Then the architect of her changed fortunes contacts her from his cell on death row: deformed, blinded by Scarpetta's own actions, incarcerated in Texas strongest prison, Jean- Baptiste Chardonne still has the ability to terrify. But, unknown to Scarpetta, there are other forces behind the wolfman's apparent actions, invisibly shepherding her and those closest to her towards eliminating those who threaten them all. And it is all orchestrated by the one man in her life who knows every nuance of her soul. Visit the author's website at www patricia- cornwell.com

A vastly changed woman from the feisty character we knew.

Written in 2003, the dynamics of this book have changed from the others as we have a change of location, character spirit and power. The only reason I like this book the least out of all of them, is because the powerful woman I grew to respect is beaten and broken. She has moved from her beautiful home in Richmond Virginia, to a rented, much shabbier place in Florida. She resigned from her position in Virginia and is trying to build a reputation in Florida while, still battling with her grief. She works as a private consultant and is very much respected. Apart from that making this book slightly depressing reading, the serial killers really save the story and provide the much needed excitement. With a fantastic and unexpected twist in the plot, we discover the secret that Pete Marino and Lucy have been keeping from Scarpetta. Don't skip this one as its important to the series.
