With this title, Walpole established the Gothic as a literary form in England. It was first published as a scholarly translation from an ancient Italian text, a supernatural tale of a fatal prophecy set in the time of the crusades and one which inspired terror in its early readers.

The birth of the Gothic novel. Where the nightmares all came from. Horace Walpole's classic novel is a must read for anyone interested in Gothic and horror in any shape or form. It's a rather short story, not in the least overwhelming for a contemporary reader. And although it's talk of giants and spectres may seem a bit silly, as it no doubt seemed back in its day, The Castle of Otranto is the classic tale of incest, ghosts, vengeance, bloodlines, curses, and murder that set the Gothic mould for the likes of Mary Shelly, Bram Stoker, and Ann Radcliffe to follow in.

This edition is like a 2-Disc special edition DVD, there's a chronology of Walpole's life, and introduction by Michael Garner who looks at early responses to the first edition. Reading that so called "literary publications" of the time believed the tale to be absurd as it suggests that human beings were capable of such barbarity and depravity, and that this was one of the main objections to it shows a fascinating insight into the impact the Gothic made on the public.
