The war raged across the galaxy. Billions had died, billions more were doomed. Moons, planets, the very stars themselves, faced destruction, cold-blooded, brutal, and worse, random. The Idirans fought for their Faith; the Culture for its moral right to exist. Principles were at stake. There could be no surrender. Within the cosmic conflict, an individual crusade. Deep within a fabled labyrinth on a barren world, a Planet of the Dead proscribed to mortals, lay a fugitive Mind. Both the Culture and the Idirans sought it. It was the fate of Horza, the Changer, and his motley crew of unpredictable mercenaries, human and machine, actually to find it, and with it their own destruction. Consider Phlebas - a space opera of stunning power and awesome imagination.

Bora Horza Gorbachul is just about the most ridiculous name for a main character you'll ever come across, but once you let Bank's universe suck you in, youll be at the end of this book before you know it begging for more. Great plot, beautiful written and an overall very well finsihed sci-fi novel. I read The Pllayer Of Games after this, which is also pretty darn good, but got lost in Use Of Weapons... Might try that tough cookie again some time soon!!
Good starting point to Banks

I like this book, the main character, Horza is probably one of Banks's best. Consider Phlebas is the only Banks novel I've been able to finish and stay fully interested. The others seem to drift in and out of focus too much and I get a bit lost and can't bring myself to finish them.
