From the internationally bestselling author of ICE STATION and TEMPLE The thriller that started it all. Matthew Reilly's amazing first novel in a new edition The New York State Library looms as a silent sanctuary of knowledge: a hundred-year-old labyrinth of towering bookcases, narrow aisles, and spiral staircases. But for Dr Stephen Swain and his eight-year-old daughter Holly it is a place of nightmare. Because, for just one night, this histaric building is to become the venue for a horrifying contest...a contest in which Swain must compete, whether he likes it or not. The rules of the challenge are simple: seven contestants will enter, but only one will leave. With his daughter in his arms, Stephen Swain is plunged into a terrifying fight for survival. The stakes are high, the odds are brutal. He can choose to run, to hide, or to fight - but if he wants to live, he needs to win. For, in this particular contest, unless you leave as victor, you do not leave at all.

 Simply amazing

It's been a long time since I was last so gripped by a book. As a first novel this is terrific. In common with other people I seem to have cottoned on to Reilly with the later books. But I read this book over a two day period, missing out on sleep between night shifts. Miss this at your peril!

 What a Thrill Ride!!!!!!!!!!!

i read most of matthew reilly's other titles before i looked at this and boy i wish id read it sooner. i was hooked, i did not put it down (so much so i took the day off work to finish it). the character is not your averae muscle bound action hero, but the story as a whole hooks you in. And i think the page turning twists (very similar to the new concept tv shows which leave you on a cliff hanger) are what make mr reilly a very succesful writer. it literally flips you at 100mph through the various locations of the new york library as you encounter several shady.... ummm.... contestants and the descriptions are just incredible. by far my favourite author of all the books i have read in the last 6 years.

A good first novel but not his best

Top 100 Books Reviewer

This was Matthew Reilly's first novel, which is self-published on the internet in lieu of getting a "proper" publishing deal. It is a bit sci-fi featuring strange creatures from all over the universe congregating in an arena in which only one can survive....It is fast paced, has lots of action and a few twists. It is not a patch on Matthew Reilly's subsequent works but is well worth a read if you are a Reilly fan.
