Claire Randall is leading a double life. She has a husband in one century - and a lover in another...In 1945, Claire Randall is back from the war and reunited with her husband on a second honeymoon in Scotland. Innocently, she walks through a stone circle in the Highlands, and finds herself in a violent skirmish taking place in 1743. Suddenly, she is a Sassenach, an outlander, in a country torn by war and by clan feuds. A wartime nurse, Claire can deal with the bloody wounds that face her. But it is harder to deal with the knowledge that she is in Jacobite Scotland and the carnage of Culloden is looming. Marooned amid the passion and violence, the superstition, the shifting allegiances and the fervent loyalties, Claire is in danger from Jacobites and Redcoats - and from the shock of her own desire for James Fraser, a gallant and courageous young Scots warrior. Jamie shows her a passion so fierce and a love so absolute that Claire becomes a woman torn between fidelity and desire, and between two vastly different men in two irreconcilable lives.

This book is one of the best I have ever read. My friend actually recommended it to me and I really wasn't sure it would be my thing. I decided to give it a go though and I am so glad I did. The relationship between Jamie and Claire is so believable, even in the strange circumstances the book is set in. Loved it and am now on the third one. If you buy this you won't regret it.
NB If anyone is wondering the order of the books is Cross Stitch; Dragonfly in Amber; Voyager; Drums in Autumn; The Fiery Cross and A Breath of Snow and Ashes.
One of the best authors around!

I was at a loss as to what reading material to take on holiday. I am a huge Barbara Erskine fan, but I have read all her work. I was having a grumble about it to a friends's mum and she recommended 'Cross Stitch'. So I took it on holiday. I didnt do much on holiday as I could not put the book down!!!! It is absolutely brilliant! The characters are so real and you really feel for them at every twist and turn. I have ordered nearly all of them now as I cant wait to get started on them. I cannot rave about this book enough. I dont even want to lend it out incase it doesnt come back. If you read this, you will not be disappointed. Excellent material. loved it!!!
The best series of books ever!

Diana Gabaldon is a genius! My mum showed me the light when she got me this first book and I was hooked after the first page! The method with which Diana Gabaldon writes makes you feel like you know the characters intricately and has you desperate to read more and more so you just can't put it down. So when you buy this book you will need to warn friends and family they may not see you for a while as you won't want to stop reading it! The Jamie and Claire saga is fantastic you will be so pleased with yourself for buying it! Just remember to buy all the others too and Diana Gabaldon is still writing the rest of the saga so you will definately re-read them all a few times...Heaven...They get better every time you read them!!!
