This astoundingly successful, superbly reviewed book vividly recreates the excitement, brutality and adventure of the British Empire. Ferguson's most revolutionary and popular work, "Empire" is a major reinterpretation of the British Empire as one of the world's greatest modernising forces. It shows on a vast canvas how the British Empire in the 19th Century spearheaded real globalisation with steampower, telegraphs, guns, engineers, missionaries and millions of settlers.

An excellent book, it made me laugh out loud in some places, cringe and laugh in others. Read it twice, because some of the facts are boggling (how the pre-'independence' dreaded Brits signed a treaty with the Native Americans, aggreeing to only go so far east, etc. -just imagine the genocide that would have been avoided had the Redcoats won).
Or how the much-feted "atrocities" perpetrated by the British were, actually, not ordered from Downing Street at all, but always down to the uptight, over zealous herbert in charge at the scene. Read it like an adult and you might just be surprised how much anti-Empire propoganda was just that - propoganda. A truly great read, this should be on the English national curriculum.
And yes, I'm a Brit who's breathing a lot easier now. Cheers!
