I read this book because it is rated as one of the best (sci-fi). No doubt its ideas are unusual and for 1950 captivating.
I think I will read the rest of series at some point, but for now will move on to another sci-fi author. A good book but for me not the best.

The greatest science fiction saga ever written starts here

Isaac Asimov is arguably the greatest science fiction writer of all time, and this book is the first chapter of his masterpiece. Set in the same universe as his series of robot novels, this story begins in the distant future, where humans have colonised planets throughout the galaxy, all linked by a giant Galactic Empire.

The problem is that the Empire is crumbling. This has been forseen by a scientist named Hari Seldon, who has worked out a mathematical formula to predict the future. "Psychohistory" is born here, and could save humanity from 30,000 years of chaos throughout the galaxy.... by forming "The Foundation".

The start of a remarkable saga!!!

Foundation is the first novel in the original Foundation saga. It is absolutely amazing and shows what a truly gifted person Isaac Asimov is. It is so enthralling and the ideas presented in the book by Isaac Asimov is truly even centuries ahead from this day and age. Absolutely brilliant and completely recommended to anyone who likes Science Fiction novels. Outstanding!!!

  Highly entertaining and unusual

This book is quite difficult to describe, it is a novel but written more in the style of a history book; albeit a fictional history of a future civilisation.

What Asimov has produced is not exactly a consistent novel following a series of characters but instead a number of episodes of significance over a period of 200 years. These episodes follow the particular stories of some key individuals which does not leave much room for character development and whilst this makes a captivating story, there was very little emotional link with the characters.

The book however was thoroughly enjoyable and the concepts that Asimov developed were literally light years ahead of eveyone else who was writing at the time. It was also interesting to notice how many modern Sci-Fi films and books have been inspired by the ideas contained in this saga.

Isaac Asimov's FOUNDATION is an excellently written piece of literature, combining pure science fiction with historical facts and philosophical ideas. A superb example of "ahead of their time" writing that you cannot put down.

  A benchmark for the Genre

The Foundation series is untouched in the Science Fiction Genre. The epic, millenium- spanning story of the rise of an empire makes for compelling reading.
