Go tell the Spartans, stranger passing by, that here, obedient to their laws, we lie. Nearly 2,500 years ago, in 480BC, at a bleak pass in a far-flung corner of eastern Greece, three hundred Spartan warriors faced the army of Xerxes of Persia, a massive force rumoured to be over a million strong. Their orders were simple: to delay the enemy for as long as possible while the main Greek armies mobilized. For six days the Spartans held the invaders at bay. In the final hours - their shields broken, swords and spears shattered - they fought with their bare hands before being overwhelmed. It was battle that would become synonymous with extraordinary courage, heroism and self-sacrifice: it was Thermopylae. In Gates of Fire, Steven Pressfield tells the epic story of those legendary Spartans: the men and women who helped shaped our history and have themselves become as immortal as their gods.

Having studied the battle of Thermopylae as part of my A level history I decided to give this book a read. I had heard good things about Steven Pressfield, and I was not dissapointed.

Throughout the book you really get into the mindset of the Spartans and almost feel like you can connect with the different characters. Never before have a felt so involved in a story, and at times I just could not put this book down.

Pressfield's descriptions of the battle are epic, awe-inspiring and at times horrific.

I would recommend this to anyone with even a slight interest in ancient History.

 Best combat novel ever!!!

I was always interested in greek history - especially the Spartans and let me tell you that anyone who has an interest in this subject will love this book. I've read this a number of times and haven't tired of it yet. The detail that the writer goes into to recreate the life of a spartan peer is astonishing. I regularly read phrases such as : you'll be transported back in time etc and in this case I really was. I honestly can't recommend this book enough and give Steven Pressfields other novels a go - you won't be dissappointed!! A stunning read!

 Gates of Fire, Fantastic!

With the exception of Baggar Vance I've read all his books. Gates of fire is to me the best of them all, though the Alexander novels Virtues of war & the Afghan campaign come not far behind.

I'd been fascinated by the Spartan tales since I saw the 300 Spartans as child. This really brough the whole era to life.

If you like a good story of history forged with fiction then read this you will not be disappointed.

This is the best book i have ever read

This is the first book of his ive read and i think its magnificent. The amount of effort that went into making this book is really apparant as soon as you start reading it.
Plus at £6 it makes the book even better.
