It's 1946, after the end of WWII, and Christina Tucker decides to take a nursing job in Longstock, Wisconsin, in order to pursue the life she had wanted before the war's outbreak. Her employer, Dr. Samuel Barlow, has been the town physician for almost 30 years. Though a bit stubborn, he becomes a guiding force in Christina's new life. And his two nephews come to own special places in her heart. Tyler Sutter, a veteran of the Pacific conflict, longs for a life beyond Longstock. But he refuses to leave his older brother, Holden, who has been psychologically damaged by the war. Together he and Christina will try to get Holden to return to the life he had lead before the war. At the same time, someone is plotting revenge against Dr. Barlow, a man who believes the doctor is responsible for another person's death. He is determined to punish the doctor for what he did, even if it means hurting those the doctor loves, including Christina.
