In THE GUNSLINGER, Stephen King introduces readers to one of his most enigmatic heroes, Roland of Gilead, the Last Gunslinger. He is a haunting figure, a loner, on a spellbinding journey into good and evil, in a desolate world which frighteningly echoes our own. In his first step towards the powerful and mysterious Dark Tower, Roland encounters an alluring woman named Alice, begins a friendship with Jake, a kid from New York, and faces an agonising choice between damnation and salvation as he pursues the Man in Black. Both grippingly realistic and eerily dreamlike, THE GUNSLINGER leaves readers eagerly awaiting the next chapter. And the Tower is closer...

Those who are getting into the quest for the Dark Tower need to treat this book as, basically, a prologue to the rest of the series. It's not a bad book but it's all set up. It's still brilliantly written, introducing us to the bizzare yet facinating land of Mid-World. get through this one because the other books are worth the effort.
Not the kind of book you would expect having read other of kings books but well worth a read keeps you reading until the very end (all 7 books in the series)
Stephen king is a master at writting and this book just proves just that.
The book has AMAZING graphic detail and you can tell that the book was great fun to write just by reading it.
Definatly one of my favourites, Insomnia is a all-round-favourite of mine but this book deffinatly comes close.
If you start to read this book, and you like magic, mystic beings and worlds that are totally different to ours but, in some way very similar, then this is deffinatly the book that you will continue to read.
Make sure you read the whoel series, as i will be doing.
Deffinatly a good book.
Beeing a huge fan of Lost, I noticed the Dark Tower novels listed as a reference to the show. This initially made me read The Gunslinger, but the book (and the following 6) took on a life of its own.
I found the book to be confusing and slow at some points, but it is essential to understand the rest of the Dark Tower series. You have to be a patient reader as the book goes on and on in a slow pace with only few action packed pages.
What I enjoyed most about this book was the mysterious themes and occurences in the book. It's hard to compare the Dark Tower series, and 'The gunslinger' to any other book I've read and to any one genre. It's a one-of-a-kind reading experience and at the risk of sounding cliche; you will never be the same person after having read the Dark Tower series.
Enjoy the beginning adventures of Roland with 'The gunslinger'
