In a time of dark intrigues and deadly politics, where those who wield magic wield power, a young street-girl with extraordinary magical gifts is drawn inexorably into a terrible plot that may destroy all the world ...Sonea has learned much at the magicians' guild and the other novices now treat her with a grudging respect. But she cannot forget what she witnessed in the High Lord's underground room - or his warning that the realm's ancient enemy is growing in power once more. As Sonea learns more, she begins to doubt her guildmaster's word. Could the truth really be as terrifying as Akkarin claims, or is he trying to trick her into assisting in some unspeakably dark scheme?

An excellent ending to her first trilogy, she draws you into her world. Excellent sci fi from a women who makes sure her heroine is not weak or emotional. Look out for her new books, starting with Priestess of the White, another great series.

Who would have thought that Canavan could top the first two? I didn't and thats part of the reason I loved this one. There's so much drama, unexpected turns and parts that make you want to cry. I stayed up until 6am trying to finish it and then decided that I better get some sleep but ended up staying up for another two hours trying to guess what would happen next. The final battle...all i can say is wow...I didn't know what was going to happen and the pace and the possible outcome left me bouncing up and down as I tried to read faster and discover what would happen next...as you can imagine, it somewhat hindered being able to read the book. Anyways...brilliant ending to the trilogy, I will definitely re read these again soon just so I can relive them all. Brilliant :D:D:D:D

Right from the first page I couldn't put it down. The intrigue and mystery is intense. The writing is so captivating.
The 2nd book is just as fantastic.I did wonder how it could be topped with book three but even better. I just stopped reading The high lord and felt so much emotion at the end in the final battle. It must be read.
