Spanning four generations, Isabel Allende's family saga is populated by an often eccentric cast of characters. Together, men and women, spirits, the forces of nature and of history, converge in a brlliantly realised novel.

 a must read

I read The House of the Spirits for the first time nealy 20 years ago and re-read it a few weeks ago and enjoyed it even more. Allende tells the most extraordinary story, the family saga is compelling, the political angle fascinating, the spiritual angle touching and and and... Allende is undoubtedly one of the most talented contemporary writers and this is her masterpiece!

 First 'Allende' Book I read

I was given this book as a gift as a friend of mine who knows me very well, she thought it would be right up my street....not being much of a reader, i'd never have picked it to purchase myself and i must say i'd have missed out if i didn't have it!

I found this book to be captivating, i love the use of occasional spanish wording as i used to live in spain some years back it brought the language back to life for me.

I believe in spirituality and clairvoyancy and the very fact that all this was intertwinned with the language, culture and a twisted tale of families and statuses in society made it a book something i couldn't put down. I have sat gazing at its cover for the months since finishing it willing myself to forget the words so i can sit and experience the excitement of reading it for the 1st time all over again.

I have not yet read any of her other books and after reading her website descriptions i think i am to go for her latest book 'city of beasts' if i am to experience any of the strong spiritual magic i witnessed in this first introduction to allendes work.

Magic on pages!

Compelling story ... but with an overdose of the macabre

Top 100 Books Reviewer

Having really enjoyed 'Daughter of Fortune' and 'Portrait in Sepia', I had very high expectations about this book, which is Allende's most popular novel and has even made it to the movie screens. Unfortunately, I found the story to be a bit too negative for my liking - it has too much of violence, mysticism and the macabre, and lacks the 'feel good' element. The style of writing is interesting but paragraphs and chapters are way too long, making for a tiring read... Otherwise the story is excellent and well worth reading.
